Sunday, February 2, 2020 - Early Morning Wakeup; Church at Mission West; Visiting with Friends; Wonderful Meal; My Favorite Super Bowl Commercial; Super Bowl LIV and THE CHIEFS FOR THE WIN!
I woke up around 4 this morning and it was only 47 - the coolest morning we've had since we arrived, but its expected to reach 79 today. It's been nice wearing short sleeved shirts again, although a light jacket is needed in the morning and evening.
We headed to church at Mission West RV Park, a short distance away. I remembered last year several people at Val's started going there. I was surprised at the number of people in attendance. It was a huge building and I'd guess at least 75-80% of the seats were taken when we arrived. I'm sure over half were from those staying Mission West's park, but there were quite a few who drove in. I was surprised when Larry Walker, one of the Treasure Lake (Branson, MO) board members, who came to the podium to lead the singing. I knew he and his wife came to the Valley for the winter as we ran into him last year at the Winter Texan Expo. We didn't stay to visit afterwards but headed back to Bentley for a little lunch.
Lin and Deb were outside so we visited with them for a little while, then Peg (and Mollie) walked over to visit. Mike was cleaning his truck outside their rig. We are going to Mexico tomorrow morning with them, and then having lunch afterwards. As we were getting ready to head in for lunch, Dee and Tim (neighbors behind us and across the fence at Val's) saw us and said hello. We walked over to the fence to visit and do a little catching up, exchanging information on our travels since we last saw them. I am hoping that we can get together with them, Steve and Diane and a few others we've met at Val's for lunch or dinner before we leave.
After lunch, I made pulled chicken to take to Dennis and Pam's this evening. While it is was warming in the crockpot, I called the RV Park near Kerrville where we will be staying next to see if I could extend our stay an additional day. Thankfully, they were able to accommodate us.
We left shortly before 4 and drove the short distance to Dennis and Pam's. We plan to eat around 4:30 - before the Super Bowl starts. There are only two or three parks between ours on the same road. Other friends of theirs Mart and Marsha had already arrived, and Mark and Laurie arrived just a short time later. Oh my, the food! Smoked wings, pork loin, polish sausage and ribs, pulled chicken, deviled eggs and salsa. Everything was so good. And if that wasn't enough, we had white chocolate covered popcorn with different nuts and candies in it, brownies and ice cream. Yum!
We were ready to sit and enjoy the game and what a game it was! Of course, if you are a football fan at all, you most likely know the outcome of the game. If you don't - KANSAS CITY CHIEFS came through and won the game in the final quarter of the game with an astounding comeback. Needless to say we were all quite pleased.
Of course, one of the things about the super bowl that everyone looks forward to are the commercials. My favorite was the Super Bowl commercial introduction where a kid was running with his football through the city, across the country, past famous sports athletes, with people shouting "Take it to the house, kid". He ran the entire time, only stopping once, at the Pat Tillman statute and stared at it for a few seconds before continuing his run to the stadium where the Super Bowl was played in Miami. Pat Tillman had a great career ahead of him as a football player, but after 911 he left the Arizona Cardinals for the US Army Rangers. He left a multi-million dollar contract and opted to enlist in the Army with his brother instead. Pat Tillman was killed in action at 27 years old.
I also loved that retired Air Force Col. Charles McGee, of Bethesda, Maryland was asked to do the coin flip before the game. McGee was a member of the Tuskegee Airmen and is 100 years old. Awesome!
After replaying some of the game after the awarding of the Lombardi trophy, we left Dennis and Pam's a little before 10. After returning home, Dean called Matt. He was texting his dad towards the end of the game and Dean wanted to visit with him about the outcome. It gave me a little time to wind down and we were ready to rest our heads shortly afterward. What an exciting time for Kansas City and Our Chiefs!
Our time is quickly flying by, and already 5 days are behind us - 9 more to enjoy and the days are filling up fast. By the way, my neck feels much better!
