Friday, February 7, 2020 - Busy Morning; An Accident; Lunch & Visit with Friends; Waiting for USPS Call; Bob Joins us Around the Fire
It was another cool morning, in the mid-40's, when I woke up. I turned the fireplace on to take the chill off. The forecast for today is calling for much warmer temperatures (it ended up in the upper 70's-low 80's). I've been bringing a load of clothes down each evening I have one, so I can start the washer as soon as I get up. It's nice to have it done and out of the way before we leave for the day.
I worked on Thursday's blog post for the next hour or two, then made our morning protein shakes. It was a pretty mundane morning, just going through the regular early morning routine....or so I thought at the time. We are meeting our friends Steve and Diane at noon for lunch. We met them last year at Val's. They are also from Kansas.
The mundane morning changed at 11:14, when my son called me (one of the times I wish we were at home) to let me know he had cut his hand on one of his saws and was headed to the emergency room. He was driving himself there and I could tell he was in a lot of pain, and he thought he had cut it pretty bad. I started praying for him when we hung up, asking God to be with him and keep him safe getting to the hospital, and that it would not be as bad as he feared. His mother-in-law was so gracious to leave her work and meet him at the hospital. I am so thankful she was there. Misti and Haleigh were on their way to Kansas City, Jen was working and was over an hour away. As a UPS driver, she could not leave until they reassigned someone. By the time they could bring someone in to cover for her, get them to drive to relieve her from her route over an hour away, it would probably be close to her just staying on the route. Fortunately, she did have a light load allowing her to make it back a little earlier than normal.
I sent Lou a text asking her to let me know Marc made it to the hospital okay. At the hospital they saw him right away. They were able to give him something for pain, and he was sent to surgery sooner than might have happened on another day. Fortunately, for Marc, the doctor was already in surgery, and was able to fit him in pretty quick. What a blessing that was! The final outcome, the doctor believes the tendon will be fine, and it only splintered a piece of bone at the end of his finger. His fingernail will not be perfect but at this point it seems he will have full use of his finger and I am thanking God for that today. It could have been so much worse. What a blessing the doctor was available. I am so grateful to Lou and Jen's sister Ella who made sure the kids were picked up at their schools and kept them until Jen could get back.
I talked to Jen later and she said Marc was resting. He is so blessed to have such a wonderful wife. She will with him back to the doctor first thing Monday morning. They will call me with an update afterwards.
Shortly before noon, Dean and I drove to Steve and Diane's. After visiting for a few minutes we decided on Delia's for lunch. Delia's is a local restaurant with six locations in the Rio Grande Valley. They only serve tamales, however they do provide several varieties. They are only available in quantities of 6 or 12. I bought some our first year here and we really liked them but we didn't get any last year. I had forgotten how good they were. Dean chose 6 chicken and I chose 6 pork. We decided we will only buy pork in the future. The chicken were good, but the pork are better than good! As we were leaving I noticed they had frozen ones for $5.99/doz. I think I am going to go back and buy some of those.
Lou called me several times to let me know what was going on with Marc which I appreciated very much. The last time Marc called me was 4:45 and he was back in his room. He was released later that evening.
After lunch, we stayed to visit with Steve and Diane for awhile. They bought a park model at Val's right before we left last year. Steve has done a great job of landscaping their yard. I asked him if he'd come to Oswego when we build our house and do that for us? Lol! As Lynette and I walked to the back of the unit to their bedroom she told me that our mutual friend Lynette had covered a headboard and valances out of another comforter for her so it would match the one she had purchased for the bed. What a great friend! She did a marvelous job, and it looks wonderful! After we went back outside to sit on their covered parking area we were visiting, when a couple walked by, making a comment about Kansas after seeing the tag on the truck. Diane called them to come back and introduced us to them. They are also from Kansas - I can't remember where now, but we had a nice visit with Russ and his wife. They have stayed in Arizona the past few years, so I was picking their brain about what to see and do there. They gave us several ideas that were near the area where they stayed, including Superstition Mountain, Mesa, and Apache Junction. Since I have not made any reservations after Alpine, TX I will definitely try to schedule some time in that area.
We visited northern Arizona several years ago (Grand Canyon, Sedona, and Route 66), and we attended the 2017 Escapee Rally in Tucson where we took time to visit Saguaro National Park and Tombstone. Other than that we only had a few overnight stays going to and from Sedona and Tucson, so we are anxious to see more of these two states on this trip, as well as southeast California.
After visiting with Steve and Diane for awhile, we headed back to the rig. We are going to meet them for dinner on Monday evening and we are inviting two other couples to join us as well: Tim and Dee, and Jack and Lynette. They are all spending their winter at Val's Kountry Corral, where we have stayed the past two years, and would have stayed this year if we had not chosen to travel these southwest states.
I did not receive a call from the Post Office today, so we will go back tomorrow and check again. I was extremely disappointed I didn't hear from them today as they had indicated I would.
Back at Bentley, we rested for awhile, then we headed next door to Lin and Deb's, where Dean lit the Fire Genie and we all enjoyed a nice evening. A friend of theirs, Bob, stopped by. He too is a Heartland owner and is staying in a nearby park. We enjoyed meeting and visiting with him. As usual, there is always discussion about traveling and the Heartland product. We learn so much by visiting with other RVer's.
Well, all in all, while the day was a little stressful with Marc's injury, overall it was still a great day. I'm so thankful he will heal and be back to his woodworking as soon as he recovers. I'm thankful that Misti and Haleigh made it to KC and arrived in San Diego safely this evening, where they will be spending the next couple of days with Logan. I know they are all very excited to see each other, and I'm hoping to see a lot of pictures of their time together.
Thank you to all for following along. I love hearing from you!
