Sunday, March 8, 2020 - Day 2 with Grandson Logan

Sunday, March 8, 2020 - Day 2 with Grandson Logan

We were a little late getting around this morning.  After breakfast, we decided we would drive to Joshua Tree National Park, and through Palm Springs, CA on the way.

As we headed out this morning, I asked Logan to stop so I could get a picture of our campground sign.

The picture below is the airport on the main road in Anza Borrego State Park, as we leave the road from our campground.  It is a sand airstrip.  We were lucky enough to see one land the first day we were here, but I didn't have time to get a picture.  It was neat to see the sand fly up from the tires as it touched the ground.  If you enlarge this you'll see the windsock just left of the bush.

Our driver for yesterday and today!

The mountain in front of us with the snow - is Big Bear where Logan went skiing the weekend before.

Palm Springs Street - Gene Autry was one of my heroes when I was a kid, along with Roy Rogers!

Palm Springs, CA

Outside of a nice housing addition.

Cool metal sculptures for sale along the road as we neared Joshua Tree National Park.
We missed the Visitor Center - it was across the street from where we turned to enter the park.

This is the only trail we hiked - and honestly I'm not sure if we did one or more of those listed.
Pictures below were taken while on the trail.

You could barely see Logan when he was in the collage - so he gets his own separate picture!

As we moved into are of the jumbo rocks, there were a number of people scaling the rocks - most with rock climbing equipment.  The guy below was free climbing - using only his hands and feet to climb - then moving across the rock to the right (sorry pictures are backwards of his climbing) and then he moved back down.

I see a picture here - do you?

These jumbo rocks were truly amazing and this is just a sampling of many!
Skull Rock (noted on the sign to the left)
The next area is the Cholla Cactus Gardens.  When the sun is shining on them - they are gorgeous and give a very special look to the cacti, almost like a glow.

I was surprised to see how close we were to the Salton Sea when we left the park, taking a nicely paved road (Box Canyon Road) directly from the park which led us back to Mecca, CA at the north end of the Sea.

There were a number of people in cars, trucks, some with their RV's and/or 4 wheeler's, enjoying the day in the area above.

We returned to Bentley after stopping at Mecca one last time where we had sandwiches at Subway.

Logan stayed for another hour or so to visit, before he needed to head back to El Centro.  We said our goodbyes with hugs.

We walked out to the car with him, visiting for a few more minutes before he drove away.  We picked up a few things outside before going in.  A short time after we were inside Dean noticed he had left his pillow.  It was in his hand, but he laid it down for the pictures.  We got in the truck and headed down the road until we got a signal to call him.  He said not to worry he had more and insisted it was okay, so we returned to the RV.

I noticed this cactus light on the hill - see how dark it is out here.

The last day before becoming the full moon.  It was really bright!

Too bright to see more than a few stars in the sky.  Of course there were lights in the park as you can see, which made it even brighter outside at our campsite.
One of the reasons we enjoy our travels is the opportunity to see family and friends, and spending time with Logan would probably not have happened without our Travels with Bentley.  We are grateful for the opportunity!  We have seen friends/family now from east coast to west coast; from the north to the south - what a wonderful time we are having.

  1. Nice to be able to visit with Logan. One of the joys of the RV life. You took a beautiful road trip and hit all the great places in one day. Cant beat that. If you haven't been to Slab City be sure to put that on your list of places to visit it's on the map.

    1. I can't believe I forgot about Slab City and Salvation mountain. I remembered late afternoon Sunday... too late to go back.
