Thursday, March 5, 2020 Moving to Leapin' Lizard RV Ranch, Borrego Springs, CA

It was nice to have extra time this morning for our move from Pilot Knob RV Resort to Leapin' Lizard RV Ranch (what a name, huh?).  It was 9:45am before we left and we arrived at the park outside of Borrego Springs at 1:43pm.  It was a beautiful sunny day reaching a high of 77.  It was one of those perfect weather days, only a slight breeze, warm, but not too warm.  It was the perfect day for a drive.

In line to go through a Border Control check.....we turned left toward our campground immediately after going through the checkpoint.

Date farms along the way.

The lady at the front desk had a bubbly personality and was a joy as she told us about places we should see while we were here.  They had quite a few brochures, including information on specific hikes in the Ocotillo Wells State Park.  We hope to do at least one or two with our grandson who will join us tomorrow (Friday) evening.

We had a beautiful site with evergreen trees planted along both sides, making a nice separation between the sites.  (we had no neighbors while here).  The branches were a soft, feathery type.  The ground was hard packed sand.  The sites were slightly wider than normal which was very nice.  We had plenty of room for our truck and another vehicle to park at our site.

The downside, there is little to no internet service here.  If you walk up around the office or down the road you can pick up a signal, allowing you to make a call or check emails, etc.  We sent a text to the kids and my sister to give them the park's phone number in case of any emergency back home.  Fortunately, our satellite worked just fine, so we could watch TV.  I missed reading the daily blogs I receive from fellow RVer's, but other than that I didn't miss the phone/and apps as much as I thought I might.

After setting up, I made us a quick lunch.  We browsed through the literature they gave us.  Mid-afternoon we decided to take a drive and check out the area.  Ocotillo Wells SP is a desert of sand.  It is mostly used for recreational vehicles and bikes.  It is really a beautiful area.  We were mostly removed from the sounds of those vehicles, as we were about a mile from the main road.

We drove to Borrego Springs, CA, a little over 18 miles away.   The lady in the office at our park also provided us with a simple map of the city, pointing out the location of the many metal sculptures that are found throughout the community.  We enjoyed looking at these and I took pictures of a few we thought the grandkids might enjoy.

This was my favorite!

There are over 130 sculptures.  We didn't have time to visit them all, but these are a few of our favorites.

We drove through a beautiful residential golf course, De Anza Country Club.  It was laid out in the middle of a housing area that surrounds it on all sides.  It was late afternoon, and it was truly beautiful against the backdrop of the mountain vistas.  We were able to drive right through the middle of the course with plush greens either side and gorgeous palm trees lining the drive.  Dean was in heaven just driving through it.  I know he would have loved to play.  If Logan's wrist was not broken I know they would have enjoyed spending some time here.

I wanted to find the grocery store to pick up a couple of things.  I had read "The Center Market" had a little bit of everything, and believe me it did.  I don't remember what we went for but Dean spied ice cream bars and thought we needed one.  Those I remember.  Mine was a Haagen-Dazs coffee flavored ice cream with toffee chocolate coating, and Dean's was vanilla flavored.  We paid a premium for them and it is not something I will buy regularly at that price, but it sure was worth it this evening.  We could have bought a large container of ice cream for the price we paid for two bars.  However, it really was a treat!

This road led to a huge date palm area, that was really run down.  The drive to reach it was beautiful.  The palm trees looked as if they had not had any attention for many years.

Back in town, we happened to drive down this dead end road - where we were fortunate to see these two roadrunners.

Flowers are starting to bloom in the desert.

It was almost 5pm before we made our way back to Bentley.  I could see we were going to enjoy a beautiful sunset and it was happening right behind us.  I had to walk a short distance in the yard area behind our site to get the full effect, and it was well worth it.  Despite the fact we have no internet, we really love the solitude of our site.

What a gorgeous evening we had for our first night here!
