Thursday, October 10, 2019 - Details for Class Reunion; Good News; Future Plans for Bentley
It was pretty cool this morning at 5am here in Bentley at only 51 degrees. Dean left the fireplace on overnight (electric) and it wasn't too bad downstairs. I turned it up to warm things up. We prefer it to be cooler when we sleep. While the coffeepot was doing it's work, I did my exercise. Both the coffeepot and I finished about the same time. Yea!
I made a list of the things I needed to get done today for our 45th class reunion. Tomorrow (Oct 11) we will meet at a classmate's house, Mark and his wife Chris'. They are providing the meal for us. He invited us to come to their house after the alumni banquet for our 40th reunion, and again when we celebrated the year we turned 60, three years ago.
At approximately 7:30 Dean and I received this text from my daughter:
It's been a long, long year for her, but with this news - it has all been worth it. The opportunities for her are wonderful. I cannot even begin to tell you how extremely proud we are of her. Giving up a job she had for twelve years, approximately the same time her oldest child, Logan left for the Navy and her youngest child, Haleigh had just started her Junior year of High School - Misti started school full-time to become a Physical Therapist Assistant. Now Logan has finished his training and has been assigned to his first post, Haleigh has just started her Senior year and Misti is now a PTA. I'm so proud of her and our grandchildren!
Back to our class reunion. Jamie, another classmate, and I have worked together on the reunion this year. We've tried to keep it simple. Saturday is Oswego's annual fall festival - Oswegofest. It is held in our beautiful Riverside Park. There will be many activities going on throughout the day as well as the offering of some great food options. Typically this is the weekend when our school alumni reunion is held, so it's not unusual to see friends from other classes at Oswegofest. However, this is the 2nd or 3rd year that the alumni reunion has not been held. I'm sure we'll all see folks we know when we visit Saturday.
Dean left to go to the garage. He is still unpacking things and just having a great time organizing it all. He won't have to worry about running out of things to do though, since he has a project to complete before we head south around the first of January. We have been wanting to replace our dining table with a combination desk/dining table.

| This is similar to what we want. On the left side there will be one or two drawers at the top, with a filing cabinet drawer at the bottom rather than a full door, as shown in the picture. The table portion will pull out providing room for four people to sit, if needed. The center storage beneath the table will hold a couple of appliances that are currently in the top of my pantry, and probably a few other things. |
We will take out the small filing cabinet between our chairs that provides double purpose as our table. Dean will make a narrow table that will give us more room between the desk and our chairs. I currently have a decorative stand behind the filing cabinet where our small lamps sits. The stand will be stored in the garage. The new table will be much deeper (for the lamp). It will have a top drawer for storage of pens, remotes, etc. and a another storage area below with a pull down door front. It will not be quite as tall as the filing cabinet we are using. While I haven't mentioned this to him yet, if it can be done, I'd like a shelf built in to the back where we can attach our surge protector strip and corral all of the wires! They are currently everywhere, and they drive me nuts! Lol!
I think Dean is looking forward to the project. He's been looking at a new miter saw - anything to buy a new tool! Lol!
He built the cabinets in the garage we added at our last home. They were much nicer than my cabinets in the house. Eventually that will probably be a project for the garage on our lot too. All in time.
After Dean left, I did my morning chores, put a load of clothes in - washing my two new pair of jeans and a couple of Dean's so I would have them for the weekend. The pair of jeans I've been wearing are growing on me. I put off buying new ones as long as I could.
I went to the Dollar store to get a couple of cards and some cups for our meal on Saturday night at the community center, and printed off several pages listing contact information for our graduating class as well as classmates that did not graduate with us. We invite them all to our reunions. I also posted an update to classmates on our Facebook page, providing more information for the two days we'll be together.
Dean returned from the garage and we had lunch. After Gunsmoke was over (lol!) we drove to Pittsburg to pick up our mail. He ordered his prescription refills so we need to pick them up. Actually he ordered them quite awhile ago (before the new address change) but they cancelled them and he had to start all over. He just left the address as it was until later, and since then we have changed it too. I needed to let them know we would not be renewing our mail service when it expires in November. I was surprised at the amount of mail we received, but as I went through it, I realized almost all of it was letters to confirm we were the ones that changed the address. I think this is a great service for customers in today's world with all of the scams we hear about.
Our next stop, since we were here, was to renew Dean's driver's license and update the mailing address. Fortunately, we didn't have to wait too long until his number was called. Earlier in his job with the phone company he was required to have a CDL license. He's made the decision over the years to maintain it. When they told him he would need to take and pass a test to renew it, I know he was wondering what that would entail. The test was to be aware of signs of Human Trafficking. The examiner told him he could listen to a 15 minute film before he took it, or he could take it on his own. If he doesn't pass it, he can still listen to the film and take it again. He opted to take it on his own, and he passed it. One of the reasons he wanted to keep it, some states have already passed laws requiring RV drivers that pull a certain load limit to have CDL's. Even though Kansas does not currently require it, he prefers to keep it rather than take the chance he might need it at some point. He also updated the mailing address. Fortunately we had picked up the mail and with all of the confirmations on the change of address, it was exactly what we needed to get it changed.
When we left Dean wanted to stop at Braum's for ice cream, so I reluctantly agreed. HAHA! On the way there it hit me - why didn't I update my address on my driver's license at the same time. My license doesn't expire for several years, but I'll make it a point to get that done next time we are in Parsons or Pittsburg. We did not want to go back and sit for another 20 minutes or longer today for my turn to talk to an examiner. We had to laugh at ourselves as neither of us ever thought of it.
Grandson Jaxson has a soccer game tonight, so I sent a text asking Marc if it was still on, since they are calling for rain. Other than some rain this morning we've not had any more. He called me to let me know that it was raining there now, but he was waiting to hear from the coach to find out for sure. It wasn't much longer he let me know it was cancelled. Boo! I was disappointed.
We headed back to Oswego. We were near the Hallowell turnoff, when Misti called me. She and Haleigh were looking for the Oswegofest Medallion. She wanted to know if I had the first clue on my phone...she could not find it and wanted to review it again. I read it to her. Dean and I decided to meet them at the park and we all plodded around the park looking under rocks, around bushes, etc. for quite awhile before we gave up. We also checked out other park locations in town before Dean and I headed back to Bentley to eat some dinner. By the time we returned, my neck and back were hurting again. I made an ice pack, took some ibuprofen and put Biofreeze on it. I was feeling a little better by the time I went to bed. Hopefully, it will be better tomorrow. Either way, tomorrow I will be going to the chiropractor. I don't want to feel bad all weekend for my reunion and into next week for the rally we will be attending.
Despite my neck hurting, it was still a great day, especially receiving Misti's news! I hope yours was great as well.
