Wednesday, August 5, 2020 - Moving Day to Vincennes, IN at Ouabache Trails Park Campground
We pulled out of 370 Lakeside RV Park at 9:34am taking I-370 to I-270, then headed south on SH 4 to Lebanon, IL where we transitioned to US Hwy 50 to Vincennes, a total of 191 miles, and were set up by 3:32pm (2:32 KS time). On Hwy 50 it was a relaxing, slow 55 mph drive that we enjoyed very much - except for a few roads that were a little too bumpy. I guess they were thrown in to keep us awake.
We were not in a big hurry this morning but still managed to get around sooner than we anticipated. We didn't want to get caught in morning traffic. Fortunately, the fog we saw first thing this morning out the windows of Bentley had burned off and it was a gorgeous day.
Looking out the door window toward the lake.
Foggy morning.
I wanted to finish yesterday's blog post before getting ready this morning. As soon as I hit post, I fixed our morning shakes, did the dishes, made the bed and hit the shower. As soon I was done, Dean emptied the tanks and started putting things up outside.

Pretty area with water we passed on our way |

The Mighty Mississippi was quite calm and beautiful this morning.
Not long after we turned off I-270 onto 4, we had a harrowing experience. There were several cars coming toward us and a semi right behind us. All of a sudden a guy in a car flew around us and barely made it back in front of us as a car met him. It was too close for comfort. We were so thankful that God was with us and kept everyone safe.
The rest of the drive was pretty easy.

Passing into Illinois as we crossed the Mississippi River. |
 |
Lots of soybeans and cornfields |
 |
Loved this old barn out in the middle of a field. |
 |
Carlyle, IL had some interesting older buildings. There is a Corps of Engineer Park here that looks very inviting. I'd like to stay there on our next trip east. |

Marion County Courthouse, Salem, IL |

I loved the colors on this barn. It seemed to be sunken in this field. |

Five years ago I saw this sign of the Wabash River Red Skelton Bridge. I've kept it in the back of my mind all this time and now we are visiting Red Skelton's hometown! |
 |
Indiana - we made it! |
The road to the campground had us wondering where we would end up, as we wound through a narrow paved road along the Wabash River, then winding up and down hills before turning into a beautiful little park area, then a beautiful single loop campground.
Once we located the campground office, we learned site #24 that we had reserved was occupied. It seems a work crew came in for a long term stay, and the person in #24 left without letting them know, and left his rig until he returned. We were given 3 or 4 sites to choose from, and decided on site #34. Not knowing what our original site looked like or where it was, we weren't sure we were getting the best deal, especially when we realized we had to share the water and electric hookups on the door side of Bentley; opposite of our normal hookups. Whoops - our electric cord won't reach and we only have an extension for 30 amp. We tried to jockey the rig around to get a little closer but then a tree up front would be rubbing the front side. After checking the weather that indicated the temperatures would not be above the low 70's while we were here, we decided we could get by with 30 amp. Dean moved Bentley one last time.

Our site for the next two nights. |
 |
Do you notice something odd here with our hookups? We may have run into this one time before, but it was a very long time ago! Overall we like the site they gave us, it was just a little frustrating at first. Although we didn't complain, they gave us a free bundle of wood for a fire and a bag of ice for the inconvenience which we thought was extremely nice of the park host. |
 |
Walking around the loop in the park. It's a very pretty campground. Several campers came in after us so the empty spots were filling fast.
|
 |
We enjoyed sitting out by the fire. It cooled off quickly, so I made us a cup of hot chocolate to drink by the fire. We enjoyed the ambiance of the moment! |
 |
A selfie - it was good to get parked and enjoying being outside. |

Our 30 amp cord plugged into our new surge protector. |
It was an eventful day, and turned out to be a perfect evening. I warmed up the two hamburgers left over from last night. A perfect, easy meal for us.
I came inside around 8:30, as it was beginning to get chilly outside. Dean stayed awhile longer to keep an eye on the fire for awhile longer. I started working on this blog post. It was after 10 before we went to bed. We set the TV for a 30 minute show. I was still awake when the TV shut off, and immediately heard dogs barking. I got up and turned the fan on to drown them out. It worked, I think I was asleep in a very short time.
Earlier I researched other things to see and do in Vincennes. I believe we may have a full day tomorrow.
By the way, Ouabache is pronounced Wabash.
Thanks for following along.
What a beautiful drive and then to end at that park! It is gorgeous! It would be frustrating to have the utilities all on the wrong side, I think we've only had that happen once or twice. Lovely gesture of the firewood and ice! Cute selfie! Looking forward to your adventure today! Have fun.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Fortunately the weather was so nice we never turned the AC on at all - it's only 77 right now and with the fantastic fan on we are getting a wonderful breeze. I believe God is always looking out for us. I can't wait to share the pictures of what we saw and did today. I'm hoping my 120+ pictures are downloaded by the time I can work on it. I promise not to share all of them. Lol! On another note, one of our boys is moving to Winemucca, NV. We will be rushing back to KS as soon as we see his brother who lives in NY, so we can see them before they leave! We plan to be out there next year so hope we can meet up with you!
DeleteYou'll enjoy the Red Skelton Museum and also the battleground.
ReplyDeleteWe just returned from their Jan. It was just amazing. I loved his shows watching it with either my grandparents or at home, all of us around the TV together. It was very moving to me and what a patriot! I've waited 5 years to get here and it was worth the wait!
DeleteWe have goneto Carlyle several times. There are 2 areas for camping. The main one has electric and water. The other one is electric only
ReplyDeleteCarlyle looked like a long established town. I would love to see more of it. Were the camping sites nice? We don't mind water/electric only - we can easily manage 4-5 days.
DeleteThe Corps campgrounds near Carlyle are very nice; we stay there if we are near. We really liked southern Illinois.
