Saturday, August 8, 2020 - Travel Day to Goshen, IN and Elkhart County Fair Grounds Campground

Saturday, August 8, 2020 - Travel Day to Goshen, IN and Elkhart County Fair Grounds Campground

It was after 10:30 before we went to bed last night.  I could not believe it was almost 6:45 when I got up.  I do not like this change in sleeping habits.  I really enjoy (and have missed) my early morning quiet times.

I enjoyed reading blog posts this morning and getting caught up, although several had not yet posted.  I wasn't glad to hear others are struggling with the changes in the new Blogger but at least I don't feel so bad for having such a hard time with it.  My biggest challenge now is trying to insert a link into the blog.  If anyone has figured that out, please let me know.

We left Crawfordsville KOA at 10:30a toward Goshen, If we are not in a rush we prefer US and state highways, and sometimes county roads too.  Since we both have lived in small towns all of our lives we enjoy seeing what others are like.

There isn't too much to tell about our drive, so mostly, I'll just share a few pictures of things that interested us along the way.

I loved the wording on this bin.  There was another one that I missed getting a picture of that was even better, but I can't remember now what it said.  I wish I had jotted it down. I couldn't convince Dean to turn around and go back.  Lol!

I love these clocks with the town name - Brookston, est. 1853

On thing about the Midwest - there are may proud Americans and they love to fly their flags.  Every town we went through today seemed to display flags all throughout town, on their streets, in their yards, or painted on buildings, etc.

The sign above is in Monticello, IN where we had quite a time with a detour through their town.  We had pulled into an empty lot next to a Kroger's grocery store for a bathroom stop.  When we got ready to pull out, we noticed the detour sign pointed left.  We did't think it was the right way to go, but honestly we were not sure.  So I called the Police Department to ask directions.  The sweetest lady answered.  I explained our situation, that we were pulling an RV.   We sure didn't want to go the wrong way and run into a road we couldn't get through, or could not turn around.  She agreed it could be confusing and kindly directed us in the right direction.

I love these rails over the highways - and a nice high one for RV's!

Barn pictures early in the day

Two more interesting drivers today - two "young" guys passed us, following each other, and flew down the road.  Not sure if they were chasing each other or just playing around, but passing more than one car at a time, then having to slow quickly to fit in between two different cars as a car was approaching them, was a little unnerving.  Again, God watched over us and I said a prayer for them for safety too.

What a beautiful drive through these tree lined highways.

More pictures of the Wabash River.  It was split upstream and came together at this bridge. Top picture is to the right, bottom to the left.

Most unique roofing job I've ever seen!

We saw a number of motorcycles on the roads today.  One group was quite large - maybe 25 riders or so.  Dean asked me when Sturgis was.  I thought it might start this weekend.  Looked it up and it started yesterday.  Maybe they were headed that way?

As we got closer to Goshen there were so many barns.  I loved them all!

For those of you from Oswego or the surrounding area - you know who we thought of when we saw this!  It just made me smile, thinking of Mike - or, Waldo to his friends.

We arrived at Elkhart County Fairgrounds at 1:54.  We were not sure where the office for RV reservations was located.  Dean stopped, as we were looking at the buildings, when a guy on his bicycle rode by us and pointed to the building in front of us to our right!  Thanks!!!!

We went inside but no one was there.  There was a packet laid out for someone who must be coming in today as well.  I tried calling, but on one answered.  We were getting ready to walk out, when I noticed the room next to us had a door open from the outside, but it was locked from our side.  We walked outside to see if anyone might be in the room, when we met two ladies.  They got us fixed up really quick.  They were so nice and helpful too!

We were here a little over 3 years ago for the National Heartland Rally.  We couldn't believe we ended up with the site right next to where we stayed that time.  Felt like being at home----haha!
We soon were set up, then had a sandwich to carry us over until dinner.

Next thing was to get some laundry done.  My laundry basket was getting pretty full, but I knocked three loads out today/night, and will do a few more tomorrow.  While we had a sewer connection in a couple of places it was early on so I really didn't need it then.

After dinner of pork chops, 1/2 baked potato and cauliflower, we took a walk through the park.  We couldn't go too far as I needed to get back before the dryer shut off.  We reminisced about our last visit here, and listened to music from a group that was performing 60's and 70's music here in the park.  I recognized American Woman - but that was it.

Love the landscaping here - and how about that corn?  It fits for this area!

Lavendar - it smelled so good!

As we walked back to Bentley - there he is - clear to the back - on the right!  The glow of sunset!

I hope your day was wonderful.  Thanks for following along.

  1. We attended a rally at Goshen a few years ago, And really liked the area. We particularly like the countryside in the clean Amish farms. Safe travels.

    1. One of the things we enjoy most about being here is driving in the country looking at their homes. They take such good care of their properties.
