Saturday, August 15, 2020 - Morning Walk, Visit to Oswego, Tippecanoe Lake, Evening Visit & First Time Experiencing Intra-Cloud Lightening?
We are trying hard to get back into a 2 mile morning walk and so far we are 2 for 2! It's fun to walk here and even when I think I've seen everything in this park, it seems like something new pops out at us. We left Bentley around 7:15 making our way through the maze we followed yesterday. It's been nice cool 60 degree weather when we start out, but it is warming up by the time we are abou 1.5 miles in. Maybe we need to leave between 6:45 to 7 to enjoy those cool breezes just a little longer.

Looking back at the horse racing grandstand.

What a great idea for extra storage!
After our breakfast shake I continued working on the blog for the last five days. After lunch, Dean suggested a ride a little southeast of Goshen. I was looking forward to this drive and sharing our destination with you.
I just can't get enough of these beautiful barns!
Can you tell by the sign on the building below where we ended up? |
The unincorporated town of Oswego, Indiana.
I had Dean stop in a lot across the street so I could walk over and take a closeup of the sign above. As I was walking back across the road someone started talking to me - it really startled me. It was a young man. He was meeting a guy there to help him with something. At first he thought we might be the guy. He noticed our Kansas tag and wondered what we were doing here. I proudly told him that we were from Oswego, Kansas, explaining if we find another Oswego in our travels we make an effort to visit. He laughed and said he had never even heard of an Oswego before, and now two in one day! Lol!!
Oswego Community Center - we would have stopped had we not just had lunch. Too bad we didn't know. |
One of the things I wanted to do in our travels is visit every Oswego we could find. Besides our home of Oswego, KS, so far we have visited Oswego, IL; Oswego, NY and now Oswego, IN. We still have a few to go and hopefully we'll see them all. We know there are at least three others, located in South Carolina, Montana and Lake Oswego in Oregon.
I found it interesting that Oswego, Indiana was also named after Oswego, New York - as Oswego, Kansas was too.
Oswego, Indiana is located on the southwest side of Tippecanoe Lake. We enjoyed driving around the lake.
It's not a very big lake in comparison to Grand Lake in Oklahoma or other large lakes in our area at home. However, these folks were making the most of the area with boats, and personal watercraft all over the lake.
We noticed there were canals coming off the lake into housing additions where several folks had their boats parked.
This area had quite a bit of vegetation in the water - but they had cleaned lanes so they could come and go from their boat docks. You can see the lanes to the left behind the boat on the left.
This place looked inviting and a great place for an outdoor picnic and games.
As we left the area and headed north we noticed this body of water and chairs sitting outside. It is a wedding venue. It appeared there was to be a wedding there this afternoon or evening as the cars started coming in as we passed it. |
Besides the wedding venue, they also had blueberries and other locally grown items.
We saw lots of irrigating this afternoon.
As we neared the intersection of US Hwy 6 and County Rd 15 south of New Paris, IN we noticed these huge fields of used tractors and other farming equipment.
After we returned to the campground, I continued working on the blog until it was time to make dinner. We had the leftover chicken breast (which we shared), an ear of corn on the cob and a tomato for dinner. It was so delicious! The tomatoes were fresh from a local garden. When we stopped at Tractor Supply yesterday, I noticed the vegetable stand in the parking lot. I was so happy to get more tomatoes and nice sized ones at that!
It finally started cooling down (it was very hot today - in the upper 80's), so around 7:30 we went for a walk on the fairgrounds again. We walked a little over a mile this evening. We met our neighbors on our way back, as they were starting out. We set our chairs out and enjoyed sitting outside. When Ed and Sandy returned we asked them if they'd like to come over and visit. They did and we had another hour or so that we were able to visit. They will be leaving tomorrow to Nappanee to have their rig worked on. They will be able to park their rig there overnight so they will be their early for planned work Monday morning.
While visiting, I had to take a picture of the glow from the sun hitting these clouds to the east. It looked like a pot of gold - but no rainbow! That's Sandy in the picture below.
The mosquitoes were after us, so we gathered our chairs to put away. As we were finishing, Ed said something to us - they are just across the road - we were not sure if he was talking to us or another couple walking by. He said come here and look at this. We walked around Bentley to experience Intra-Cloud Lightening for the first time. It was amazing and went on for quite sometime. We finally had to go in because of the mosquitoes. I was happy to get a picture without the lightening and one with it to compare. |
The lightening in the couds was really amazing to watch!
We have another excursion planned for tomorrow to another city in Indiana - stay tuned!
