Saturday, February 10, 2018 - Heartland Breakfast; Drive To Rio Grande City; Dinner at Church's; Relaxing Evening

I was up early this morning to finish my post for Friday before we went to breakfast with members of the Heartland group.  We met at Furr's Fresh Buffet in McAllen.  Other than a breakfast buffet we went to in Las Vegas years ago, I think this is the largest selection of breakfast food I've seen on a buffet.  I thought the food was pretty good, too.  It's always fun to spend time with friends and have the chance to visit.

Afterwards, we stopped at Academy, so we could exchange two of our purchases from earlier in the week: the padded bike shorts we purchased for Dean, and the bicycle lock.  We picked up the wrong size shorts for Dean, and the lock did not work.  With that out of the way we headed back home.  We wanted to do something today and finally decided we would just take a ride to Rio Grande City.  We enjoy just seeing the countryside and we hoped we might find something interesting to see or do there.

It was getting late in the afternoon by the time we arrived, between 3 and 4, so we stopped at a Church's Chicken.  It was a busy place, the drive-in was just a long line of cars making it almost impossible to park in their lot.  We ended up moving to an adjacent shopping center to park our beast.  We walked over, went inside and got in line.  There were 4 people in front of us, and one person waiting for there food.  I'm sure it was close to 10 minutes before the guy waiting received his food.  After standing there for about 15 minutes or so, the people in front of us had yet to be waited on, and orders were going to the folks in the drive thru on a regular basis.  We noticed Church's in a couple of towns we passed earlier so we decided we would just wait awhile and try one of those.

We made the drive clear through Rio Grande City but honestly we did not see much.  I googled things to see and do here; and checked Trip Advisor.  The only thing that came up was a Billard Hall.  That wasn't exactly what we were looking for.  I thought there might be a park, or some nature trail we could walk.  We did find diesel for $2.59/gallon at the HEB and that was a good price from other prices we saw posted on the drive here.

On the return drive we stopped at the Church's Chicken in Penitas.  I chose the 3 piece tenders with okra and a biscuit, and Dean chose the 3 piece chicken with cole slaw and a biscuit.  We received our Senior discount - no we don't mind - it all adds up!  In fact the gentleman who waited on us said his friend told him, if you set the money you save from senior discounts aside for a year it can amount to quite a bit.  I suppose that is true.  We've certainly received several here in the 5 weeks we've been here.  This was our first time eating at a Church's.  We thought it was okay.  Not bad, but not great.  We would eat there again but probably won't rush to do it.

There was nothing spectacular about our day, but it was still a good day.  The weather was wonderful, clear skies, temperatures in the low 80's, with a light breeze.  We spent the day together, we enjoy taking rides to see the countryside and driving through small towns, whether we find anything special to see or not.

Once we returned home we watched some TV and I caught up reading the blogs I follow.  A quiet evening before heading to bed.

  1. You will need to go back to RHC. Did you see the Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto and Stations of the Cross? We ate at the LaBorde House with our group. Very good.

  2. I've heard that we need to go back from another friend as well. We will be more prepared than we were Saturday! The trolley ride sounded fun and we were disappointed it was not running, but now we know. It wasn't that far away to make a return trip.
