Monday, February 12, 2018 - Visit to Mexico; Lunch @ Las Margaritas; Laundry; Relaxing Evening

It was cool this morning so we did not walk or ride our bicycles, besides we have some things to do today and we wanted to get right at them.  After our morning breakfast I gathered up all of our laundry, stripped the bed, and sorted everything before we left Bentley.  We'll be doing laundry this afternoon and I wanted to have everything ready when we get back.

Dean and I are going to Mexico this morning - our first trip by ourselves.  We had a nice drive down.  We enjoy driving by all of the fields of vegetables and many of them were being harvested today.  Our drive down was fine and other than being cool outside it was a beautiful day.

We parked and made our way into Progresso - it's literally across the International Bridge unlike some of the other border towns that require driving several miles before you reach the closest town.  There were already quite a few people parked in the two large parking lots - either side of the road.

We were going to pick up some things to bring home with us and to visit a pharmacy for a couple of items.  Both places are within two blocks of entering Mexico.  Unfortunately the main thing I wanted they did not have on the shelves.  I couldn't believe it - both times we've been here the shelves were full of it;  I don't know if it was a busy weekend, or what.  I was able to get what I wanted at the pharmacy and then we headed home.

We passed this boot store on our way.  Loved the boot!

Since it was almost lunch time we decided to stop in Pharr at a Mexican restaurant Dennis recommended to us shortly after we arrived here.  I was wanting to know a good place to eat Mexican food, as it is my favorite.  He suggested Las Margaritas and it did not disappoint.  I ordered a cheese enchilada plate with charro beans.  It also came with refried beans, and some kind of soup.  I should have asked what it was.  It had a few beans in a broth with what looked like a very skinny spaghetti.  It was quite good and we both enjoyed it.  Dean ordered a taco salad and it was HUGE!  He said it was very good.

Chips, Salsa and Soup were served with our meal.  If you wanted extra chips and salsa there was a charge.  We didn't need any though because our food came out before we finished the first basket.

My cheese enchilada dish.  Some of the best enchiladas and refried beans I've had in a very long time.

Dean's taco salad.  The picture doesn't really show how big it was.  I've never seen such a big taco shell for a salad.
After finishing our lunch, we headed back to Val's.  Now it's laundry time.  We haven't been in a couple of weeks, so I had six huge loads to do.  I probably won't wait quite that long again.  The worse part of doing laundry is getting the clothes completely dry.  It requires quite a bit of time and money.  I was putting quarters in the dryers so fast I lost track of how many times I did it.  They only run 10 minutes and then you have to feed them again.  I'm pretty sure I put quarters in all of them at least 3 times and a couple of them required feeding the machines 5 times - towels and jeans.  At .50 a pop, it adds up pretty quickly.

I still had to hang several things up in Bentley when we got back since they were a little damp.  Fortunately I was able to get almost everything put away before we went to bed by leaving a small electric heater and a fan going in the bedroom.  I had clothes hanging everywhere.  I should have snapped a picture of that!

I made us a light dinner of leftover white chicken chili, then washed the dishes.  We spent the rest of the evening watching TV before finally heading to bed a little before 10.

  1. Without slighting anyone else who does this, I just want to say I appreciate single day posts better than two or three. With so many blogs to read, I pick and choose and as much as they are all interesting, we just don't have the time (or data usage) to read more than one day at a time. I find I stop in more often if it is a single day read. just my fyi. :) I enjoyed your post very much and I think your enchiladas look good (even though they are not like back home)as does Deans salad. i love Mexican food, Bill doesn't. It has to be a restaurant that serves both for us to visit it.

  2. I too prefer the single day posts both when writing as well as reading others. For me it's difficult to remember details if I wait too long to blog. Day's begin to run together! LOL! I do love reading all of the blogs I follow. It's almost replaced reading books, but not quite.

Dean didn't used to care too much for Mexican but he's grown to like several dishes. He has a few favorites - carnitas being his favorite. He does not like HOT food and I love it. The good thing about that is I usually get all of the salsa, unless it happens to be mild.
