Sunday, September 9, 2018 - Visting the Western Half of the Eastern Part of Mount Desert Island & Another Visit to Cadillac Mountain

Sunday, September 9, 2018 - Visting the Eastern Half of Mount Desert Island & Another Visit to Cadillac Mountain

Click on the link below to view a map of Mount Desert Island - where Bar Harbor (and several other towns - Bernard, Bass Harbor, Southwest Harbor, Seal Harbor and Northeast Harbor are located).

Mount Desert Island/Acadia National Park Map.  You can see there are two "sides" the eastern (Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park) and the western side (Southwest Harbor/Bernard).  Today we visited the western of Mount Desert Island - we took 233 west from 3 over to Somes Sound, where we intersected with 3/198 along the west side of Somes Sound to Southwest Harbor, Bass Harbor.  At that point we headed back north on 102A, to 102 and back to our campground.  It was another beautiful ride.

Here are the pictures from today's trip.  Again, I am noting information under each picture rather than write a narrative.

Aunt Betty's Pond - we didn't see it, but I had to include this for MY AUNT BETTY!  Made me think of her!  I love you Aunt Betty!

The sign at the Barber shop is Harbor Barber!  Enlarge the picture to see the sign.

US Coast Guard Station at Southwest Harbor

We were parked overlooking the Harbor where the Coast Guard Station is located while we ate our lunch.  A beautiful spot!

I love looking at the homes.  There are so many beautiful ones here, cottage like with lots of flowers.  The weather is perfect and the flowers and gardens are still flourishing.

Just a beautiful picture with the mountains in the background, the waterway running through this beautiful green countryside.

Lobster bouys are used for decoration on buildings everywhere.  They are so colorful.

You don't have to go far to find someone selling firewood alongside the road.  It's help yourself and leave the money.  A good way to keep the wood dry.

Post Office in Bass Harbor, ME.

Bass Harbor Lighthouse.  There were LOTS of big rocks to climb over to get a picture of this.  I tried to get closer and finally decided I wasn't as limber as I used to be ...... continuing on might mean TROUBLE.

I just can't get enough views of the bays, oceans, sounds - just the water in general!

The backside of Bass Harbor Lighthouse.

Signs on display at the Light Station.

This is the only time I saw a sign saying - do not remove the rocks.

One of the many lobster pounds we saw - always at least one in every town, and sometimes several.

Bass Harbor
After we returned from our drive, we drove in to Ellsworth.  We wanted to check out the route to our next stop.  When we visited the Visitor Information Center a few days ago, the gentleman there told us to take a side road and Dean wanted to make sure it would work for Bentley.  He was satisfied and we returned to the campground.

Trenton Bridge Lobster Pound - Where we stopped 12 years ago for Dean to have lobster.  It was closed today (Sunday).

Our campground

Office
We returned to Bentley to eat dinner and grab some sweatshirts and jackets since we are heading back to Cadillac Mountain to watch the sunset.  While the days are very comfortable the evenings get pretty cool - high 40's, low 50's, and the wind blows on the mountain!
Sunset beginning at Cadillac Mountain as we arrived.

Royal Carribean Cruise Ship in port at Bar Harbor

Overlooking Bar Harbor

Cruise ship heading out of the harbor - begining their transition to another stop overnight.

A wedding taking place on Cadillac Mountain

This is one of the last pictures of the sunset I took before we left.  The clouds started gathering late this afternoon so it messed with the sunset a little bit, but it was still beautiful.  The clouds were after effects from the hurricane before Florence.

A close up of clouds - it kind of looks like a giant bug or creature of some kind.

Glow of sunset over Bar Harbor

Sunset in between when we arrived and final sunset.

Glow off to the right from the actual sun setting.
Another glorius day here in Bar Harbor, Maine.

There is so much to see and do and again I am behind.  Dean is going to watch the Chiefs play football tomorrow, Sunday Sept 16 (he just discovered he'll be able to get it on Dish) so I hope to get caught up during that time.

  1. Lovely pictures. The cruise ship picture brought back memories of our one and only Caribbean Cruise in 2004.
