Saturday, September 15, 2018 - Congratulations to Granddaughter Dacy; Visit to New Brunswick, Canada; Lunch at "The Pier"; Our Campfire & Watching the Sunset

First thing today we want to give a shout out to granddaughter, Dacy Peine.  She placed 1st in Western Pleasure Horses 5 and under; and 3rd in Level II Horsemanship at the Kansas State Fair 4H Horse Show.  We are so proud of this young lady and how hard she works throughout the year to train her horse.  Great job Dacy!  We love you!

Our granddaughter, Dacy Peine

Before I tell you more about our day I just want to comment on the weather since we've been here.  It has been absolutely perfect - a little cool in the morning, warming nicely in the afternoon but not hot, and then providing a wonderful cool evening - perfect for sitting outside to enjoy the sunset with a jacket and sleeping great with the window slightly open.  We are enjoying every day!

Our adventure today is visiting Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada - crossing the Franklin Delano Roosevelt International Bridge that connects Lubec, Maine to New Brunswick, Canada.  The only other access to the island is by ferry or personal boat.  Going through customs was not too bad, and a few minutes later we were on the island.  Our first stop was the Visitor Center, a few minutes away, where a very nice woman provided us with quite a bit of information about the island; pointing out places we might want to be sure and visit.

Our next stop was at Mulholland Lighthouse.
Information about the last lighthouse keeper for Mulholland Lighthouse.
From the lighthouse you can see downtown Lubec, ME - just across the water.

I will include all of these plaques for those of you who would like to read through them.  If you enlarge them to Original Size they are quite easy to read.

While all of the information is interesting I especially enjoyed the last two or three paragraphs about the industry in Lubec.

More information on Lubec - Very interesting

Information on Roosevelt Memorial Bridge

Mulholland Lighthouse Info

The people on the beach in this picture were digging for clams shortly before I took this.  We saw several people doing this during low tide.

If you enlarge this picture you will see what looks like several black piles in the water.  We suspected this was part of a salmon farm.  We found out later that was correct.  These were taken from Friar's Head

In this picture there is part of a round metal structure which is also part of the salmon farm, also taken from Friar's Head.

Two above pictures are of the salmon farm equipment taken at a different location.

I just loved the stone, beautiful trees and the blue, blue sky.

This was on Harbour Heights Drive leading to Harbour de Lutre.

Information posted at Herring Cove - what a beautiful place to sit and enjoy the ocean breezes.

Herring Cove

Enjoying Herring Cove - there is sand until you get closer to the water and then there are beautiful water worn round rocks.  The round rocks are also at Raccoon Beach.

Herring Cove Golf Course

Just another beautiful spot we saw as we toured the Island.
East Quoddy Lighthouse or "Head Harbour Lightstation".  I was disappointed that we arrived too late to walk over to the lighthouse.  When the tide comes in you can no longer cross until the next low tide and then you have a short window to get there and return to the mainland before the tide covers the ground.  The tide is quite strong and is extremely dangerous.  Notice the sign below - Incoming tide rises 5 feet per hour for 8 hours.  That's some deep water!
Warning at the Lighthouse!

See the lighthouse in the background - red and white!

You can see the walkway going up to the lighthouse leading from the ocean floor.  There is one leading down on this side, but it is not showing up in this picture.

This is the other side of the waterway between the two islands.

You can see how fast the water is running between these two islands.

A better view of the Lighthouse

More salmon farms.  There was a gentleman here who gave us a little information about these and confirmed what we thought they were for.

I love this picture of the lighthouse.

After leaving the Lighthouse, we stopped at "The Pier" on the Waterfront for lunch.  Dean ordered fish and chips and I decided on a cheeseburger.  Mine was excellent.  Dean said his was okay.

Nikki's - made me think of my neice!

As we headed back towards the FDR International Bridge, we took a left at Glenseverin Road that leads to Racoon Beach.

Cute little house we saw on our back to the main road 774.

Out of all the beautiful places that I fell in love with on this Island, Racoon Beach was by far my favorite.  I loved the rock beach and I really, really wanted to take a rock home with me.  There was a lady standing there and I asked her if she was from the Island.  She actually lived in Lubec but comes here often just to enjoy the beach here.  She did not say it was not okay to take one, but she sure didn't encourage me to do so, so again I left the rocks where they were.

We did enjoy seeing several whale spouts while we were here as well as a couple of whales that rolled up from the water a bit where we could see them from a pretty good distance.

The boat on the left was a whale watching boat.  The boat on the right was sightseers watching for the whales.

With this and the next four pictures you will see whale spouts - where they blow the water into the air.

This was a nice strong one.

On the right to this one, you can see where a whale rolled up out of the water.

And here is Racoon Beach - notice the fog in the background.  It came in early this morning and it is just hanging out at the fringes of the bay area, and then just blanketing the water beyond that.  Look at the rocks on this beach - it is huge.  They are not very big and have been polished smooth with the waves of the water washing over them day after day, hour after hour for many years.  Some of them are just gorgeous!

Our last stop before heading back to Lubec was at Roosevelt Compobello International Park.

Flowers at Roosevelt Campobello International Park

Roosevelt Home on Campoello Island, New Brunswick, Canada
We toured the home:
The family when Franklin D. Roosevelt was a child.

The docent told us the last visit FDR made to their home here on the Island, he left his hat and pipe, as if he would return again.  He became very sick while visiting the island and was later diagnosed as contracting polio.  The docent stated that once this diagnosis was given he never returned to the Island.

What a gorgeous view - right to the water.  Notice how the upper half of the door opens to let the breeze flow through the house.

FDR's mother used this megaphone to call the children for meals and when it was time to come in at evening.

I love this table!

Soapstone sink

Boiler - water was heated from the stove and stored here for baths.

Croquet anyone?

The boys' room - and next picture is the view from the door to outside:

What boy (or girl) wouldn't love this playground? Englarge this picture to original size - on the left you will see the children's boat they played in.

Water, with the woods on either side.

What a wonderful day we had at Campobello Island.  The weather could not have been more perfect.
Lubec, Maine as we crossed from Campobello Island, New Brunswick, Canada back to the US.

Interesting character in downtown Lubec

We even had a campfire tonight.  It was still warm, but we had to don jackets before the sun set.

Goodnight.

  1. What beautiful pictures. You have been to a Canadian province that I have only thought about visiting. Had a relationship with a fellow way back before I met Bill who's family was from Miramichi, NB but never got there. Thank you for the tour. Love the pictures of the red and white lighthouse and the one of the couple sitting on the beach in their bare feet. Roosevelt's home would be awesome, love the story of the hat and pipe. :)
