Well as you know Friday mornings are pretty important to Dean - it means we get to eat breakfast out - well, most of the time - and we did today. Just a short walk from our campsite, is a road, blocked off by large boulders, that we can walk to in just 5-7 minute. It leads right to a restaurant - Mainely Meat! They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. I have to say we were impressed with their "Breakfast Stack". As we read the description it reminded us of one of our favorite breakfasts that we used to order when we owned a travel trailer at Grand Lake near Berneice, OK. Ms. Donna's was our favorite place to have breakfast on weekends when we were there. It consisted of biscuits, scrambled eggs, home fries, with sausage gravy over the top. That's exactly what the "Breakfast Stack" was at Mainely Meat as well. It was DELICIOUS! I have a feeling we may visit this place again...the reviews on BBQ; lobster and ice cream are all VERY GOOD!

We walked back to the campground, and then headed to Ellsworth, ME. We needed to get some DEF for the truck and Dean needed a couple of other things for the RV. On our way back we stopped at the Bar Harbor/Acadia National Park Visitor Information Center. They gave us several maps and suggestions for our visit to the area. We will put those to good use over the next few days.
When we returned to Bentley, we wanted to make our site a little homier, so we pulled out our big mat, set up our chairs and our table. Often we do that when we arrive - if we'll be here for very long, but shortly after we returned from our ride yesterday it started raining. It didn't rain very hard, but it did rain for an hour or so.
Dean put our satellite dish out when we returned from Ellsworth. Fortunately he was able to get a really good signal. He started perusing the channels and started watching a movie, Gone Girl with Ben Affleck. Neither of us had seen it before and we both got interested. I finally told him we needed to turn it off if we were going to do anything today, so he recorded the rest of it. We haven't been able to use our satellite for several weeks now, due to the areas we parked that prevented us from getting a signal. It sure was nice to know we could finish this later.
What a great day we had in Bar Harbor. The temperatures were in the mid-70's. A beautiful breeze and blue sky. It was busy downtown - very, very busy. There was a fine arts festival going on at the Bar Harbor Inn, and a Holland cruise ship was in harbor. We saw many "Holland" cruise bags and/or shirts, etc. as we walked down the streets, besides all of the folks here for the last hurrah before winter sets in. The trees are beginning to turn -- we noticed more today than yesterday, so in a few weeks (after we are gone) it will probably be a full blaze of red, yellow and orange! I feel certain we'll see some beautiful colors somewhere on our way home though!
After we finally found a place to park - several blocks from downtown, we had a destination in mind. We both were hoping to find a new pair of walking/light hiking shoes - something we can use for both activities. I had checked online to see if there were any stores in Bar Harbor. I found Cadillac Mountain Sports with several positive comments about their stock and how reasonable the prices were, so that's where we headed. A young lady helped us, answered our questions, and gave us several options to choose from. We both ended up with waterproof Merrell Moab's that we expect will work out well for us. Hopefully we'll get a chance to try them out walking here in the park to start with, and maybe on a couple of short hikes at Acadia National Park to begin breaking them in.
I wanted to find a "Maine" T-shirt and Dean was looking for a ballcap. After stopping in a number of stores we both found what we wanted at Cool as a Moose! Now, it would just be cool to SEE a moose!! --- a real moose!
We were both beginning to get a few hunger pangs. Since it was 2:30, we really didn't want to eat a meal, so what should we have??? Oh, I know ICE CREAM; and it was delightful. We set on a park bench along Main Street, where we enjoyed watching the cars passing by, vying for their chance to turn on to, or off of this busy street, or as they stopped and waited on pedestrians while they made their way through the crosswalks. You definitely have to pay attention when driving a car in downtown Bar Harbor. For folks who do not live here it's only a day or two and they are gone, but watching the FedEx man, the police cars, etc. I'm thankful I don't have to drive in this traffic everyday.
We walked on down to the pier where many of the boat tours leave from and then followed the Shore Path that begins just off of the pier and follows along the shore line next to some large Inns and private homes.

It is a beautiful path. Several people walked down on to the rocks while the tide was out, looking for shells, climbing on the rocks, or just sitting to gaze out at the bay. There was a beautiful breeze and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. I took pictures of these signs along the Shore Path with some interesting information about Bar Harbor.
Fortunately, we came off the Shore Path onto Main Street and just a block and a half from where we parked the truck. We had one more stop to make before heading back to Bentley - the grocery store. Bar Harbor has a Hannaford. I really love these grocery stores - they have really great produce. We have almost gone through most of our fruit so I picked up some strawberries and red grapes.
We finished the movie we recorded, Gone Girl, when we got back and all I can say is - we were disappointed. If you've seen it you understand.
Three more full days here and so much to do! We've got a couple of ideas for tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Love the area around Bar Harbour , toured that area back in the 90s with our class B camper, such beautiful scenery. Can't beat a nice pair of Merrels, so comfy.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful! I'm anxious to give our Merrels a try. I think we'll try them out here in the campground the next couple of mornings when we take a walk. They seem a little "tall" - probably due to the bottoms having a bit more grip to them. It might take a few trial walks to get used to the feel.
ReplyDeleteLoving the photos of the area!
ReplyDeleteI also got some Merral water proof shoes. Was worried they might be to hot to wear because of the water proofing but that was not the case. Was nice to walk in the wet grass and still have dry feet.
I'll have to show you how I was told to lace them up to hold my heal in the back of the shoe to relieve heal pain. Lacing makes a difference, never knew that.

Nice that you are enjoying your trip and scenery around Maine. Hope the new shoes work and you now have Maine things to wear back home!
