Tuesday, March 2, 2021 - Travel Day to Copper Breaks State Park, Quanah, Texas
It was around 4:30am when I awoke this morning. I worked a good while last night to catch up on the blog post of our recent travels. I wanted to finish it up this morning in order to post it before we leave today. About an hour later, and that task was completed. I finished my second cup of coffee then got busy starting to store things for our move today. After our morning shake, Dean headed outside to prepare for our move. I packed a lunch for our drive and before I knew it, it was time to pull the slides in. It was 8:57am when we pulled out of Black Rock State Park and headed toward our next stop - Copper Breaks State Park, located just south of Quanah, Texas.

Lots of cactus in this part of the country. (You can click on any picture and enlarge it if you wish). |
 |
We saw many houses with entrance fence posts like this. |
 |
Another interesting fence - this was within a field and went for quite a distance. |
 |
It was 43 degrees when we left the campground. An hour later, at 9:57 it's already 51 degrees |
 |
Joyce - this is for you. Did you know there is a Fredonia in Texas? |
 |
An old abandoned home. I like the stone fireplace. |
 |
I'm not sure what this is, but I thought it was interesting. I enlarged the picture to take a closer look. It looks as if someone is standing in front of it. |
 |
Our first stop for a bathroom break. What a pretty location. Unfortunately, across the road behind us there had been a lot of trash thrown out. It's a shame people can't throw their trash away, rather than on the ground. |
 |
This Historical sign was at the rest stop. It's sad to see these signs vandalized like this. |
 |
This caught my eye - Heart of Texas Country Music Museum - when I saw Jim Reeves name on the side of the bus. My sisters and I loved the song "He'll Have to Go". After we arrived at our site for the night, I looked the Museum up on the Internet to learn more about it. Here's a link to Heart of Texas Country Music Museum if you are interested in learning more about it. |

I loved this house in Santa Anna, TX - too bad it has all of these highway signs in front of it. |
 |
As we entered Coleman, TX; at first sight, we thought these statutes were real. Notice the dog behind the horse & rider.

A neat mural in Rule, TX |
 |
Rule, TX had a cotton gin. I didn't notice it until it was too late to get a picture. We saw several fields of cotton, and cotton bales waiting to be picked up. |
 |
I'm not sure how many turkeys were in this field, maybe 50 or more? |

At last, we are almost there!!! |

It was a very long travel day for us - 246 miles. We arrived at Copper Breaks SP at 3:09pm, slightly over a six hour drive. After a quick stop at the park office, we found our site and were soon set up. We set our chairs out behind Bentley where the sun would shine directly on us. It felt good setting in the warm sun for the next 30 minutes or so, winding down from the drive today. Afterwards, we took a short walk around the park. It felt good to move around.
Not long after we arrived I set out some leftover taco soup I had in the freezer, to thaw for our dinner. It sure tasted good, followed by an apple.
Copper Breaks Park is a dark sky area. It's 8:40 and we are going out to take a look. Oh my, it's been a long time since I've seen the stars shining so bright in the sky. It was so dark outside, Dean couldn't see me when I just walked a short distance from him. I hope the sky tomorrow night is as clear as it is tonight. They offer StarWalk,a guided tour of the night sky. We'd like to do that tomorrow night.
It's just shy of 9pm. I'm tired, so I'm closing. There are several trails here in the park, and we'd love to get out and enjoy a few of them tomorrow as well. Plus, Dean wants to drive into Quanah, TX, 15 miles north of us. They have a couple of flea markets, so we might check those out while we are there.
Thanks for following along, and feel free to comment if you would like.
That was an interesting drive, thanks for taking me along! Love the courthouses and that white house is gorgeous. Georgia style. How long are you staying? It looks like an interesting area. Campground/site pictures please? :)
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you enjoyed the journey. I am a courthouse nut!!! HAHA We originally planned to stay 2 nights, but we added a third night, so we'll leave here Friday, then travel to Oklahoma for 3 nights. I'll include pictures of the campground in today's post. I hope to get it done tonight but I took an overload of pictures today. Pictures take a lot of time if you need to re-frame them.
DeleteI really love the courthouse pictures! The little country music museum looks interesting! The murals are very cool. Love dark sky places.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I wish we had time to visit the country music museum. I'm excited about the dark sky. We were so tired from travel yesterday we just stepped out to look. Tonight we are taking our loungers to a site they have specifically for that, so we can lay back and enjoy the stargazing.
DeleteThat was a beautiful drive through many small towns. Texas loves their courthouses and that mural in Rule looks like it's been there for ages. It was black here in Ajo last night too and so many stars. Nice to be somewhere that you can enjoy the stars at night. Enjoy your new location.
ReplyDeleteThank you Doug. We loved the highway we took as it was almost entirely small towns, and we enjoy them. We are going to spend some major time star gazing tonight.
DeleteDidn't know there was a Fredonia in Texas. Haven't been to Fredonia KS in a long time. Lots of states have towns with the same name. As you know, there are Oswegos in several states and Iolas too.
