Saturday, September 19, 2020 - Taking Our Time This Morning; Fire Breathing Dragon - Oh My!; Short Drive Today; Revisiting Bridgeton Covered Bridge

I woke up a little after 5am and it was cold!!  I turned the fireplace on to 75, but it wasn't warming things fast enough, so next the furnace came on.  Soon it was comfortable.  I sure enjoyed that first cup of coffee as it helped warm me up.

I worked on the blog for an hour or two.  We had full hookups at Vidalia, so we both had showers this morning, then Dean emptied our tanks. I packed up as much as I could while Dean showered, made our lunch, then washed the dishes before I took my turn showering.  He emptied the tanks while I dried my hair and got ready for the day.

Before we left we wanted to make use of the tokens I got from the Hardware Store after we arrived yesterday.

Yes, it's a fire breathing dragon!

The token causes the dragon to breathe fire!  I could not get the video to load - so here's a picture I took of the video....see the fire!

It was 10:19am when we left Vandalia, IL headed toward Rockville, IN.

We passed by Casey, IL - remember.. the small town of big things!  We did not notice this exit sign before - Casey Kansas.  Our daughter-in-law's name is Casey and she lives in Kansas.  LOL!  Casey is to the right of I-70, Kansas is to the left.

We are back in Indiana

Such a beautiful Courthouse in Terre Haute, IN located in Vigo County

A few barns we saw this afternoon as we headed north toward Rockville, IN.

It was 2:10 when we arrived at Covered Bridge Campground in Rockville, IN.  We were here 3 years ago.  We chose the same campsite as we had at that time, C-10.  It is 30amp electric, with water and sewer hookups.  We are only using electric and water, since we just emptied the tanks this morning we will not need the sewer.

Our campground

We had things set up in about 20 minutes.  I walked up to the office to get an envelope that includes a form to fill out.  They leave them in a mailbox outside the office door.  Once you fill out the form and include your payment it can be dropped in a slot in the office door.

We rested for thirty minutes or so, before we left to visit our favorite covered bridge in this area.  It is the Bridgeton Covered Bridge, located in Bridgeton, IN, next door to the Bridgeton Mill.
How's that for a mouthful of Bridges!

Nice log cabin on site.

A few pictures I took of the covered bridge and the mill while we were here.  It is such a beautiful setting.

Isn't the construction of this bridge beautiful?

It is still a working mill.  When we were here 3 years ago, I bought a package of 7 grain pancake mix.  We really liked it so I wanted to get another package while we were here.  In addition I also bought a package of pumpkin pancake mix.

Of course, since they had hand dipped ice cream, Dean wanted to stop in the ice cream shop as well.  Dean chose the praline pecan ice cream but after reading this sign:

I decided a root beer float sounded better.
My float was amazing.  Dean said his ice cream was just okay.  Does this sound familiar?

After our snack, we took a drive through Bridgeton.  When we were here three years ago the owner of the mill told us about the 10 day Covered Bridge Festival held every year.  The small community of Bridgeton is a large part of the festival.  They have constructed a number of booths where booths where crafts and food are set up during the festival.  It has expanded over the years.  There is an area with a number of RV sites for crafters/food vendors, and large fields for parking.  The owner of the mill told us that he made enough during the festival to cover his expenses for a year.  Unfortunately, the event has been cancelled for this year due to the Covid pandemic.  It's sad, as many people count on the income.  It will certainly have a significant impact to the area.

These are buildings that have been constructed over the years as the event has grown.  They are booths where people can sell their products and food.  Several large buildings have been constructed for crafts, etc.  Individuals can purchase space in the building.  It is a really beautiful  venue.  Hopefully, they will be able to hold the event next year.

There are several large fields like this where parking is available for people visiting the festival.  There are several covered bridges in the area.  There is another town that also has a number of buildings available for people to rent during the festival, but  can't remember the name.

We returned to Bentley.  I wanted to get the blog caught up before we move to Goshen, IN tomorrow.  Shortly before 6, Dean started the grill.  We are having hamburgers, with baked beans and deviled eggs.  They were delicious.  Dean really likes his new grill.

After our meal, Dean watched TV while I continued to work on the blog.  We were happy we chose a short drive today after yesterday's marathon drive.

As always, thanks so much for following along.  Always feel free to comment on the blog.  I love hearing from you.

  1. I like you love the old barns, homes, bridges etc! Love the covered bridge and surrounding area! Too bad so many events are being cancelled and even into 2021. Just too sad! Your hamburger dinner sounds yummy!

    1. Yes it is so sad for the people putting on these events and all of the vendors who are losing a good part of their annual income.

  2. Liked the dragon and barns but I loved the covered bridges. The one in Winterset, Iowa was the one we saw and loved it the best. Clint baby was there. :)
