Monday, September 14, 2020 - Nice Morning for a Walk; Morning Visits; Lunch at Amigos in Eureka Springs; Late Afternoon/Evening Visit Around the Fire

We left the bedroom windows open last night and it was COLD when I woke up this morning.  I finally got up close to 5.  I should have come downstairs earlier as it was warmer there.  I had planned to turn the fireplace on to take the chill off but I didn't need to do that.

I looked out my window as Linda was taking a picture of Keith cooking breakfast.  Before I could take my picture of her taking a picture, this is all I got!  Lol!

I worked on the blog posts for the past few days to get caught up.  After our coffee, we decided to take a walk around the campground.  It was a beautiful morning, cool but not too much.  This campground does not have full hookups - only 30 amp electric, and only a few water hydrants within the park where you can fill your tank when you arrive, or obtain water in containers you bring with you, if needed.  Despite the lack of those amenities, the beautiful, tall pine trees that nicely shade most of the park area, more than make up for the lack of some coveniences.  Dean and I chose a site across the street from Alvin/Linda and Keith/Drena.  We have constant shade, while they have a misr  shade/sun.  With temperatures into the 80's during the day we are glad we chose this site, although we can set out at any one of our sites at some point during the day.  Only once did we need to move to another site due to the sun.

As we finished our walk around the park loop, we noticed Alvin and Linda were outside drinking their morning coffee, sitting by their Fire Genie warming themselves from the chill.  We visited for awhile, and a short time later Keith & Drena walked over.  We discussed breakfasts on the Blackstone grills.  Dean and I had a few questions about them as we have not yet cooked anything on ours.

We left to our own rigs for breakfast.  Later we joined back up at Drena and Keith's site.  Drena shared many tips, tricks and utensils they are using for their blackstone.  One of the things I really liked was the nice heavy material tote (acutally a tool tote) to hold the various grill tools: spatulas, fork, tongs, squeeze bottles for oil, water, scraper, etc, as well as the heavy duty "paper" towels they found at Sam's.

Entering Eureka Springs!

Typically at our casual campouts we have dinner at a local restaurant.  This morning, we discussed and agreed to have a mid-afternoon meal in Eureka Springs at Amigos Mexican Restaurant.  Alvin drove his truck for the four of them.  Dean and I drove separately as we wanted to stop at a Dollar Store on the way back.  We were sure surprised when we arrived at the restaurant and the only parking was across the street.  We had to pay $5 for each vehicle to park there.  Of course we could stay for up to 4 hours, but we only wanted to eat.  We thought it was pretty expensive.  I should have taken a picture of the large box with slots for each numbered parking spot.  We had to poke our cash into the slot.  We all wondered who monitors this.  How do they know if you paid or not, since there is not a ticket you can put on your vehicle to show you paid.  It was an interesting concept!

We walked across the street to the restaurant.  We were seated pretty quickly, but we had to wait quite awhile before our waitress came back to take our order.  The salsa and our entrees were very good.  I think everyone really enjoyed their meal.

The food was great, but service wasn't quite up to par.

I did a quick look to locate a Dollar General near us.  Last night Dean used most of the fuel to start the fire in the Genie, so we needed to get some more.  I also bought a couple of aluminum pans that we can use to cover food while it is cooking on the Blackstone.  As we were walking toward the checkout counter I noticed some DVD's.  I stopped to glance at them.  It was a combo of 4 movies on two CD's.  The one that made me decide to buy it was Murphy's Romance with Sally Fields and James Garner.  I really enjoyed that movie and more than once have wanted to watch it again.  In addition there was another Sally Field movie and two with Julia Roberts, including Steele Magnolias.

The DVD I bought at Dollar General - that doesn't work.

A few pictures I took on our way back:

After we returned, and put our things away, we all gathered at Keith and Drena's.  Unfortunately their site wasn't quite as shaded.  We ended up moving over to our site to visit.  It's amazing how many topics, stories, and laughs can pass around a campfire.  Discussions on places we have visited, or want to visit is another topic that almost always comes up.  We learn so much from talking to others.

Last night while we were sitting around the fire, a couple walked by.  We said hello, and they stopped to visit.  They full-time in their RV during the winter - staying in locations with warmer weather.  They travel on their boat during the summer months.  We've met several people who do this.  We had a nice time visiting with them.

Alvin and Linda have AT&T phones.  They have no service here in the campground, although Verizon is working well.  The campground is below the dam, so the elevation is pretty low.  They drove up towards the dam to make some phone calls.  While they were gone, a lady pulled her travel trailer up alongside the road between Alvin and Keith's rigs, where the bathroom and a water hydrant is located.  In the meantime Alvin and Linda returned.  It was a bit tight backing in, but Linda directed him in to the spot like apro.  After the lady finished filling her tank she could not get any water inside her camper.  She asked our group if anyone had any idea what might be wrong.  Alvin walked over to help her, and evenutally Dean and Keith walked over as well.

Bathhouse, with hydrant to the left near the road.

She finally ended up calling her dealer.  Linda asked her what she would do while she was here and she said I'll just use the bathhouse.  She told us she had been coming to the park for almost 30 years, and she'd make due until it was fixed.

A short while later, another couple walked by us.  The wife went into the bathhouse to shower, and her husband stood outside visiting with us.  We've visited with many people over the years we have been RVing, but I don't remember a time so many people stopped to visit with us.  We had some great conversations.  This couple was telling us about a place they had stayed in Maine, explaining they had taken a boat from the place they were staying over to Bar Harbor.  I missed the location, so later I asked him where it was they took the boat from.  It was Winter Harbor.  Come to find out we had both stayed at the same campground when we were there.  Then it was an entirely different conversation about the town, Schoodic Point, the cove where we were parked, etc.  I love this part of the RV world.  So many of us have something in common!

Our neighbors to the north of us turned music on while we were visiting and it was LOUD.  I do not understand why people do that.  Many people play music at a low level where you can just barely hear it.  Not this - it was obnoxiously loud.  They were a few sites north of us.  It really carried.  We called it a night at about 7:30 and returned to our rigs.  Fortunately, once we shut the door and windows we didn't have to listen to it any longer.

I suggested to Dean that we watch the DVD I bought at Dollar General.  Dean put the DVD in and it would not play.  He messed with it for well over 30 minutes before we finally decided either the DVD player is not working (first time we've used it since we had the electrical problem at the campground in Osceola) or the DVD itself is not good.  Tomorrow we'll ask one of our group if they can try playing it to see if the DVD works for them.  At this point, I'm hoping the DVD disc is the problem, rather than having to replace the DVD player.  We don't use it often, but it's great to have when the grandkids are with us, and we occasionally enjoy watching an old movie on DVD's we have.

It was another great day enjoying a beautiful location, weather and great friends.
