Dean informed me last night that since tomorrow was Friday he was looking forward to finding somewhere in nearby Bowling Green that we can have breakfast.  After our drive through the other day and checking out locations on Trip Advisor, we decided to try Meme's Place.  The building was pretty plain, but you walked into a nice diner, that sported a men's coffee group.  There was a table of about 8-9 of them chatting away.  The special for the day was ham, eggs, and hash browns, which is right up Dean's alley.

My scramble

I decided to try their scramble.  It was good, but I thought the eggs were going to be scrambled.  It looked to me like they were fried and just kind of chopped up so they were cooked through.  The ham was shaved ham, hash browns were frozen patties and the cheese was American cheese - my least favorite type.  Considering all of those things, it was better than I expected.  I couldn't quite finish it - as it was a lot of food.  The owner was very nice.  As we were paying, she asked if we were travelers.   When we said yes, she wanted to know where we were from.  I believe in our travels that was the first time we've been asked that when visiting a restaurant.

Once we returned to Bentley, we quickly had things packed up and ready to go.  We pulled out of Cozy C Campground a little before 10.  We took Highway 61 to Louisiana, MO,  crossing over the Mississippi on the bridge that will soon be replaced with a new one.  It was a narrow bridge but no worse than the two we take when we pass over the same river near Paducah, KY.  We met a semi as we were nearing the other side.  He waited for us to exit the bridge, before he started across it.  Dean was okay with that!

We soon passed through Pittsfield, IL.  They had a gorgeous courthouse in their downtown square, but it was difficult for me to get a very good picture.  I was confused when I saw it was the Pike County Courthouse.  I commented to Dean that I thought I already had a picture of the Pike County Courthouse, and he reminded me, we are in Illinois now, not Missouri!  Well, okay then I guess each state can have a Pike County!  Unfortunately I did not manage to get a great picture but you can still see the beauty in this structure.

Guess what City we were entering when we seen this.....?

Enlarge to see this unique water tower!  I couldn't help but smile!

We stopped at a Rest Stop just north of Springfield, IL about 50-60 miles from our next stop.  Dean and I both noticed a Forest River Fifth Wheel sitting across from us and the semi parking lane.  I asked Dean, Do you think that is Bob & Patty?   About that time I saw a lady with the same haircolor and cut of Patty's.  I said it is them, and hopped out of the truck.  I yelled Patty, she turned, but then walked on, then turned around and came back.  I waved and here she came - and we were giving each other a big hug.  What are the chances?  We had a quick visit with them before they took off and we were soon heading north ourselves.

Just a few minutes later Dean said look, there's a passenger train and I turned just in time to see Amtrak pass by on my right.  I wish my camera had been ready to snap a pciture of it.

Near our exit toward Peoria, we started seeing large fields of wind turbines, but we did not see any turning.  We've seen a few not turning in a field before, but I don't think we've ever seen the entire field at a standstill.

It wasn't long and we were pulling into Kamp Komfort Campground, down a country road in the middle of miles of cornfields and soybeans.  The campground was separated into pull-in sites, one providing 30 amp service and the second providing 50 amp service.  On this hot, hot day in Illinois, most rigs were in the 50 amp section.  It would seem the campground has been here for awhile because most of the park had large beautiful trees which really helps keep those temperatures down.

We paid our fee and the owner led us to our site.  Dean and I work together to get things set up quickly so we can get the air conditioning turned on.  Surprisingly, it was cooler inside that I expected.  It was so hot outside though that by the time we finished and the main things inside were taken care of, we just wanted to set back down.  Dean turned on the TV and about an hour and a half later I woke up.  I made chicken salad sandwiches for lunch and then we decided to take a ride around the area.

As we left the campground, we headed in the opposite direction of where we entered.  To our immediate left as we left the campground, there was a train track.  We no more than got across than Dean noticed a train was coming.  I watched in our rearview mirror,  and they didn't blow their whistle until they were just a short distance from the crossing.  It gave me the shivers.  It did not have a crossbar or lights, so we will definitely double check this crossing before we start across it again!

We visited three small communities that were nearby.  They were all three nestled in among fields of corn and soybeans.  The houses in most of these cities were immaculate.  We enjoyed our drive, as we always do, seeing new parts of the country.  Fortunately, Dean and I both love driving through the countryside.

I love old barns

Goodfield Water Tower

Carlock, IL

I'm not sure what this is - but it was interesting!

This tree looked like it had about 10 long arms - reminding me of some of the cartoons with the trees that would reach out and grab you.

We spent the rest of the evening watching TV before heading to bed.  We have a plan for tomorrow, so check back.
