Wednesday, January 10, 2018 - Making Brownies, Morning Walk, Golf & Rag Rugs?, Lunch Out, Oh My Aching Back

I've been going to bed pretty early because my back has been hurting but this morning I was feeling pretty good.  I'm glad since we have a big day planned - both of us, but we are not doing the same thing.  As soon as I was up this morning I made a pan of brownies that I will be sharing with others later this morning.  It is still a little cool in the mornings, so instead of turning on the heater or the fireplace this morning, we used the heat from the oven to warm things up.  We did do our morning walk, about 1.25 miles.  That is 3 times around the park and we need to increase it and try to get 2 miles.  We enjoyed walking at our park in Oswego - so much more to see!

Beautiful sunrise this morning!

It ended up being quite late yesterday before we ever got water back so we never did get to shower or do laundry so both of us hit the showers this morning.  So glad it is back on today - since we will be around others!!  After breakfast, washing dishes, making the bed, and all of those daily chores we must do, I was nearly ready to head out for my activity for the day.

At 9:30 two of the Heartland friends at the park next to us stopped to pick Dean up.  They are going to golf this morning and their tee-time is at 10:00.  Soon after he left, I carried my brownies to the truck, and drove down the road a short distance to our friends, Dennis and Pam's Park.  Pam invited her cousin Kathey (who we visited just a few days ago) to teach a rag rug class at their park.  There was probably 12-15 women who showed up.  If you know much about me, you know I am not crafty.  I am not a sewer, and really not that interested in trying things like this but I've always loved these rag rugs, so I decided I would at least go and see if it was something that interested me.  Pam's mother used to make these rugs and come to find out she did this and was blind.  Wow, that is amazing to me!  Kathey learned to make them from watching Pam's mom.  There were a few ladies that caught on to this and did a wonderful job.  I was not really one of them.  I kind of understand but as with most crafts I'm not interested enough to put in the effort needed to make them look great, but I brought my work home and I may mess with it some more when I have some spare time, and feel better.  I do wonder if I had been feeling better today if I might have been able to do a better job.

The ladies seemed to enjoy the brownies - and we shared the leftovers with another gorup that was playing cards over in the corner away from us.  While we were there we discovered they had the water off again today.  That water line that broke must be a real pain to get repaired.

After the craft session, Kathey drove us over to Pam's motorhome where Dennis and Kathey's husband Olin was waiting for us to go eat lunch at Mambo's (seafood restaurant).  Poor Dean lost out - hope he's eating lunch at the golf course!!

I will admit by now, my back was hurting pretty bad.  In fact when I lifted my right arm and moved it to the right, or even tried to lift my right leg over my left leg it really hurt and once in awhile it almost feels like a spasm on the right side of my back, just below my shoulder.  I was so glad Dennis was driving us.  Before we left I asked Pam if she had a couple of Tylenol I could take.

The meal was quite good.  I ordered the fish & shrimp plate - 2 pieces of fish and 6 pieces of shrimp.  It included a salad and a roll.  It was a lot of food but it was too good to leave any of it.  All of this for $7.99!

Afterwards, we returned to the park so I could get the truck.  Dennis gave me some maps of the Rio Grande Valley area showing where all of the cities are located and the major roads.  I have one for the RV and one to take with us in the truck.  It will be very handy to have as we travel around the area.  He also gave me a couple of other booklets - one of things to do in the RGV and another listing the RV resorts in the area.  I had asked them about a good local Mexican restaurant to eat at but since Dennis isn't that crazy about Mexican food they didn't really have a favorite, but he checked around for me and recommended ?????.  I googled it and it sounds very good, so it is on our list of restaurants to try in the near future.

I'm so glad the drive back to our resort was under a mile because my back was really giving me fits.  I decided to take another tylenol after I got home, as the pain had not let up much, if at all.   I was not back at the RV very long before the guys dropped Dean off out front.   He had not eaten so he made a sandwich.

A little while later, I heard this sound like somebody hit something and even asked Dean if he heard it too.  A short time later I heard a car drive away and we never gave it another thought.

After suffering awhile longer, I had Dean put some Biofreeze on my back - it often helps when nothing else does, but it didn't seem to phase the pain either.  It finally got to the point I could not get comfortable and I was just having spasms every time I tried to move.  I finally got myself into a somewhat comfortable position on the couch and dozed off.

Later after I woke up Dean asked me if I had locked the truck when I got back from Dennis and Pam's.  I could not remember so he went out to check it.  I had not locked it, but he noticed there was some plastic on the ground beside the truck.  When he walked around and looked he noticed someone had hit our truck.  He walked over to the neighbors right across the street from us and asked him if he had hit our truck.  He said no, he hadn't hit it.  Dean told him that someone had, so they walked out to their vehicles and sure enough the back right light on their car was broken - that was the plastic on the ground at our vehicle and you could see some slight damage to their car.  He said his wife must have done that when she took the car earlier.  That was the sound I heard.  I guess we should have got up and went out to see what happened, but I would expect that if we heard it, whoever did it would have realized they had hit something and come and said something.  He was very nice about it though and told Dean to get an estimate and he'd turn it into their insurance.  We'll look into that tomorrow.

Dean had noticed an advertisement for a chiropractor in "The Winter Texan" and suggested I give him a call and see if I could get in to see him.  It was about 4:30 when he mentioned it and their advertisement said they were open until 6:00.  First I checked for reviews online and all of the reviews were very good so I decided to give it a try.  I couldn't go on like this.  I've had back pain before but nothing like this.  They could not see me this evening, but they can see me at 8:30am tomorrow.  I said I would be there.

By later in the evening, I was miserable and told Dean I was going to take something, then going to bed. Hopefully I will feel better in the morning.

  1. Cheri, I have a tens machine for pain and swear by them. Cheap to buy and you can wear them around under your shirt during the day. I was injured 10 years ago or so and now I just use it every now and then. Come to think about it, I loaned it to a friend who said it worked well. Have to get that back:) Works when the pain is caused by muscle or tissue.

  2. I'm not sure what that is Mark - where can you purchase them? I would love to try one out to see if would help. That 3 weeks we went without walking really caught up with me I guess. I'm also going to ask the doctor about suggestions for riding in the truck Typically I try to walk around the truck/rig at least 4-5 times every time we stop, but it was so cold the first two days all I wanted to do was get back to a warm vehicle. And....this trip we didn't run across many rest areas where we could pull off the road and park - most of our stops were on wide shoulders along the highways....not real good for walking around the rig several times with traffic passing by.
