Saturday, January 6, 2018 - Our First Venture in Mission, Breakfast, Visiting Friends, Grocery Shopping and an Illusionist!

Saturday, January 6, 2018 - Our First Venture in Mission, Breakfast, Visiting Friends, Grocery Shopping and an Illusionist!

Our cupboards were nearly bare - especially when it came to fixing breakfast, so we decided to splurge and have breakfast out this morning.  As with any big city, you can't just drive a few blocks like in Oswego, it's a few miles, with a nice dose of traffic thrown in.  I suppose by the time we leave here we'll become somewhat used to it.  We headed to Denny's, but on the way we discovered it was very near Cracker Barrell, one of our favorite places to eat breakfast, so that's where we ended up.  The meal was great!

After breakfast we returned to our park so we could finish our registration and pick up information we needed to know about the park and their rules.  We found out about how the mail delivery is handled, how to get into the park if the gate is locked (It is open from 6am to 6pm - otherwise the gate is locked).  They provided us with both a passcode and a remote control.  We can use either one to re-enter the gate if when we returned we find it closed.  In addition to these we received a calendar of events for the month of January.  They have quite a few activities going on, if we choose to participate.  We also picked up several periodicals that are published for "Winter Texans".  One newspaper, called The Winter Texan, seemed  to provide the best and most thorough details of what is going on in the area.  It is published once a week.  The newspaper is left at the numerous RV parks in the area.  There are many, many cities in the area and they are full of RV parks.  We have friends staying at parks in Donna, Rio Hondo, Harlingen, Alamo and probably more as we do not know all of the places by name or where everyone is staying yet.  Tonight there will be an illusionist performing in our clubhouse at 7pm.

Office and Clubhouse at Val's Kountry Corral

Once we finished getting registered we returned to Bentley.  I had sent Pam a message earlier that if we were able to get registered in time we would head over to see them and their place.  They actually live in a subdivision that is right down the street from us (.08 miles) that includes stick built homes, park models, RV's and motorhomes.  They purchased a lot in the park last year where they now park their motorhome.  They have a nice cover over the motorhome and a large concrete area adjacent to it, giving them double the square footage as they can utilize this space for many activities, and it keeps them well shaded.

We visited for awhile and then walked up to the clubhouse for lunch.  They are serving hotdogs, hamburgers and pulled pork sandwiches, that comes with one side.  Dean chose the hot dog and I went with the hamburger.  We thought the food was excellent and we had great company.  Afterwards we returned to their site and learned more about the area and what all there is to do.  I think we will manage to have something to do as often as we want.  They really cater to the "Winter Texans" down here, as it is a huge boost to their economy.

When we left, we headed to H-E-B, a super grocery store located only in Texas.  I love these stores - they have everything!  Dean was anxious to get home to watch the KC Chiefs play so I tried to hurry as much as possible - but it's really hard in a place like that.  There is so much to see, and since it's not a place I regularly shop in, it takes time to find the things on my list - even though it wasn't that long!

I'm sure Dean was thinking, yes we are finally finished as I paid at the checkout!   Once  again we returned to the Park where Dean immediately settled in to watch his Chiefs lose in the playoff game.  What a disappointment - we always get built up expecting something great - and then we are disappointed again.

We had a bite to eat and Dean suggested we walk up to the clubhouse to watch the Illusionist that was to perform this evening, and I agreed.  It lasted about an hour and a half and was interesting.  At the very beginning, all of a sudden the main prop that was behind him started to collapse, almost on top of him.  They finally got that fixed and then the rest of the show began.  There were a lot of laughs as he pulled various folks from the audience to participate.  I've never been that interested in magicians or illusionists, so it was just okay for me, but Dean really enjoyed it so it was worth going.

Notice the prop behind them - that is what almost fell to the ground.  He chose this lady from those attending to participate in one of his illusions.

Another participant from those attending - Super Chicken!

We are going to have breakfast with Dennis and Pam tomorrow morning about 10.  It's more of a brunch at another resort.  It sounds quite good.  The cooks make fresh belgian waffles and omeletes to order, as well as many other dishes.  Dennis told us it is their meal for the day when they attend this, so that sounds good to us.  I'll tell you more about it in tomorrow's post.
