Friday, August 9, 2019 - Moving to Rawlins, WY

Friday, August 9, 2019 - Moving to Rawlins, WY

I was up early this morning.  After working on the blog most of yesterday afternoon and evening (and making sure all of our reservations were made up until we arrive at Yellowstone), I wanted to go back to the blog this morning and try to finish up one more post before we leave today.  With that done, I moved into high gear to get things packed up for the move and made our lunch before going out to help Dean finish hooking up.  We were on the road at 9:38am.  We headed north on 287 from Loveland, switching to Taft Hill Road a short distance up the road (and much less traveled than driving through downtown Fort Collins).  We followed Taft Hill Road until we reached 287 that took us to Laramie.  Here we moved to I-80 the rest of the way to Rawlins.

Wyoming is a brand new state to me, and a new one to go on our State Map.  Dean drove through it when he traveled to Washington to see his brother Dale many years ago.  We are staying in a number of RV parks in Wyoming traveling to and from Yellowstone.  If you were here you would hear my camera clicking like crazy today!  It's so beautiful.

These two rock spires really stood out on the hill by themselves, especially against the white clouds.

Mesas near a cattle/horse corral.

It was such a beautiful day with blue, blue skies full of puffy clouds.  We saw lots of cattle.

More cattle.

If you look close you can see the little spire on the end of the middle high spot.

Here's a closeup.  I wonder how long it has been there - and how long before it might fall.

The scenery continues to change.

We almost missed this sign letting us know we were entering Wyoming.

More wide open spaces, with farms dotted here and here.

Homes were so far apart but electric service seemed to be available.  I have to assume they dig wells for water.  I can't imagine a water system going for miles to serve one or two homes.  I was surprised at the number of ponds/lakes as we drove through the state.

We saw many of these snow fences.

A beautiful house sitting alone.

Before long we were passing Laramie, WY.  We will be staying here one night on our way back to Estes Park.

I kept asking myself, Isn't it Montana that is Big Sky Country? - well today, I wondered why it wasn't Wyoming:

You could see this sight no matter which way you looked going down the highway.

Nice big pond.

Wow, look at these snow fences.  I can't imagine that much snow.

I'm so glad this was such a beautiful day.  We enjoyed it so much.

We arrived in Rawlins, Wyoming at 1:35pm (Mountain Time) at the Red Desert Rose Campground
Rawlins on the northwest side of town.

As we drove by, Dean and I both wondered what this was.  There were horses, cows and a few other animals in small corrals/pens, some with small buildings nearby.

Our campground - Red Desert Rose

What a nice gesture.  We were given this note with two Andes mint chocolates.
After resting for awhile, Dean was anxious to get out and see the town.  We almost always do this the first day we arrive.  We drove all over Rawlins and we saw a few things of interest to share.

I loved these two bird sculptures in the downtown area.  I could not find info online that explained the significance of them.

An interesting mural downtown.

A very large Sinclair plant is located just outside of Rawlins.  Here's Dino, their mascot.

As we drove by this house, I told Dean STOP.  I asked is that a real deer - I thought I saw him move.  We set there for a minute or so and it never moved - could it be stuffed?  Dean finally moved on and I kept my eye on him - sure enough he moved his head and followed us.  I guess you just have to be in a housing addition to see wildlife out west.

And a few streets away, we watched this Mama deer follow her baby across the road.  The baby was too quick for me to get its picture too.

This is the penned area we saw as we drove in to Rawlins.  We could not find anyone around or any explanation of what this area was.

Dean wanted to find a local country road to drive.  We thought this looked like a good one, until we realized where we were headed:

They have a beautiful sign but also another one that said stay out!  We turned around!

A beautiful church in their downtown area.

Back at the campground Dean grilled hamburgers while I started laundry, and worked on today's blog post.  I bought some refrigerated Nestle's cookie dough. It breaks apart to bake one or more cookies at a time.  Tonight I decided to give those a try and made 4 cookies in a small aluminum cake pan.  I didn't have anything else small enough to go in the convection oven, but it worked perfectly.  I like the idea I can fix 2 or all, based on the need at the time.

It's now 9:05 and that's it for tonight.  We have several things we want to check out while we are here tomorrow, so stay tuned.
