July 16, 2021 Making a List and Checking it Twice - Much to Do Before We Leave Monday, July 19

July 16, 2021  Making a List and Checking it Twice - Much to Do Before We Leave Monday, July 19

The people we bought the property from removed their belongings from the building yesterday.  It took a good part of the day.  Later in the day we went down to walk through it.  When we moved to Oswego in 1970 the property was owned by a local man who had a business here.  Later the State Highway Department was located here. After it closed in the early 1970's, a local school teacher and his wife purchased the building and the property we originally purchased.  They owned it for several years.  They sold the property we just acquired to a lady who made it her home and operated a daycare.   Since then many people have come and gone, and the building has fell in to disrepair.

Dean and I went down to the building this morning to walk through it.  We emptied the remaining items in the refrigerator/freezer to the trash container.  Our neighbor walked over and we visited about the options we might have.  Our plans are to have the buildings removed.  There is a huge tree between the main building and the garage behind it that will provide some good shade to the northeast of our original property.  After returning to Bentley, I contacted the City of Oswego, Evergy (electric service) and Kansas Gas Service to have the utilities disconnected.

Dean went to the property this afternoon and picked up items that were in the yard, so he could mow this afternoon before we leave Monday morning.  We are thankful Ty has agreed to mow for us again this year.  If the rain keeps coming, he may wish he had said no.  It rained again here most of the evening, but it was nothing compared to the rain one of our neighboring cities, Parsons, KS had, with 6-7 inches of rain.  There were many pictures and comments on Facebook about various issues due to the heavy rains that caused waterways to quickly flood across the community and outlying areas.

We've been trying to meet up with our granddaughter Dacy.  Between her work schedule and all we've had going on it's been hard to find a time to do so.  We finally found a day we were both free and we met with her this evening.  She works in Webb City, MO.  We met her at Del Rio, a Mexican Restaurant in Joplin, MO, only a few miles south of her work place.  It is one of our favorite Mexican Restaurants.  We love their cheese dip, and salsa.  I love the slightly sweet taste to their salsa.  I brought half of my meal home to enjoy for lunch tomorrow.  We spent slightly over an hour catching up with Dacy.  I can't believe I forgot to take a picture of her!!  We had such a good visit.

As we headed west up the hill, returning to Oswego I had Dean go around the block west of our property, then back east, so I could take a few pictures to share with you.

This is the place.  We are heading east in this picture.  The property we originally purchased, is just to the right (or south) of the new property.

Close up of the buildings from the back.

You can see where our garage is located - located near the south property line.

Our rock showing "The Peine's".

Closer look of the two buildings.

It is pretty rough looking.

Front view.

From there we drove to Riverside Park to the Overlook with views of the Neosho River.  We wanted to see how much the river had come up with the recent rain.  As we left Oswego for Joplin earlier, we noted the river east of town was up quite a bit (the river bridge is about a mile from our new lot).  We were surprised we could tell it had raised more when we returned within a three hour period.  A couple of things about the park - the river was still raising, with debris rushing down the river; we had a great visit with my great-niece Dani for 20 minutes or so (we really enjoyed that); and how wonderful it was to see so many people in the park, high school kids, families, etc.  It was just great to see so much activity this evening.  I wish I had thought to take a picture.  We also had a nice visit with Eddie and Karen before we returned to our car. Eddie's dad and Dean worked together for many years.  Dean wanted to drive west of town to see if Little Labette Creek was out.  Water was over both the north and south part of the road that slopes quite a bit to the highway.

This field was covered in water.  I love how the trees are reflecting in the water.

We turned around and came back towards Oswego - the same field as above.

A short distance from the bridge over Little Labette Creek and the road was closed both sides of the highway.

We returned home and I  downloaded the pictures I took so I could post the blog.  I didn't get it all done last night.  Just too tired, so I finished it this morning.

  1. What beautiful property! I really like the big building's character. Too bad they let it run down so badly. :( Wow! that water! We love Mexican food and I always bring half home too. :) There are a few in Winnemucca that are really good. The best one (in our opinion) closed unexpectedly a few years ago..but Chihuahua's is good too!

    1. We too, love the character. It has really gone downhill quickly over the past several years with no upkeep at all. We had rain off and on all weekend too. The river went out of its banks over the weekend, but is already dropping. That's the second time this year. I've always thought the US should come up with a way to move water from rivers that often flood to areas that often have drought conditions. Wouldn't that be something? Mexican is my favorite too! I'm excited for our journey to Winnemucca. I won't be surprised if we visit Chihuahua's as all of us like Mexican food!

  2. Hi- though the buildings look rough the roof lines appear even & so footings solid -therefore perhaps they could be resurrected & repurposed without detracting from your other property.Seems a shame to tear down as took a lot more to build.
Enjoy the blog & lifestyle in your part of the country. All the best.

    1. I sincerely appreciate your thoughts on the building. We seriously thought about it, however, there are just too many issues for us to take it on, and build a home too. On the upside, the concrete pad will be a great place to park our RV when we are home, since all of the utilities are on site. Thank you so much for your comment about the blog.
