Saturday, December 9, 2017 - Morning Chores & Visit to Grand Lake o' the Cherokees

Saturday, December 9, 2017 - Morning Chores & Visit to Grand Lake o' the Cherokees

After going through our normal morning routine I told Dean I'd like to make a quick trip to the storage unit to get the extra files/folders so I could finish getting all of the papers filed that I sorted yesterday.  I just want to get this chore finished.  We made the trip to the storage unit and while we were there we picked up our stadium seats.  We have a couple of basketball games to attend next week.  When we returned, I got right to work on my filing job. I was about half way through making new labels for the files when my label maker ran out of paper.  Hmmm!  I sure am having a hard time getting this job finished.

We have a day trip planned for this afternoon.  Before we could go Dean loaded our grill and his grill tools in the truck.  Tomorrow he is going to a Chiefs game with son Brett and the grandkids, Dacy & Tucker.  They are going to tailgate and this is Dean's contribution.  Brett will bring the food.

With that out of the way, we set out for Grand Lake 'o the Cherokees - one of our favorite places to visit.   Growing up my folks used to take my sisters and I to Bernice Point Resort on Grand Lake where we spent many Sunday's with friends of ours swimming, boating and learning to water ski.  What fun we had there.  It was something I hoped I could do as an adult with my own kids.  A few years after Dean and I were  married we bought a small travel trailer that we often camped in at Grand Lake, at...you guessed it - Bernice Point Resort.  As time went on we upgraded to a larger travel trailer and eventually purchased a 2 bedroom travel trailer that set on a waterfront lot in Horse Creek Resort.  In between we had a 2 bed/2 bath mobile home on the far east side of the lake.  While we loved the mobile home, we missed the Bernice area and eventually sold it to go back to our "roots".  These were some grand times on Grand Lake with our family and friends.  Shortly before we retired we sold the travel trailer at Horse Creek.  Retirement was going to offer us a new opportunity - to travel anywhere in the US we chose, and that was when Bentley came into the picture.  We continue to look forward to many more visits to Grand Lake, a very special place to us.

Today after stopping at the Woodshed Convenience Store, Buffalo Ranch, we traveled to Horse Creek Resort.  It had not changed too much in the three years since we last rented a lot there.  Of course we could not drive through Bernice without driving around the area and down to Bernice Point Resort where we rented a lot for several years.  A few changes, but nothing major.  Our next stop was in Ketchum, OK, then Langley, OK - passing over Pensacola Dam to Disney, OK.  Pensacola Dam is a wonder in itself.  If you are interested, read more about Pensacola Dam here.

We saw this decorated boat as we drove through a housing area near the lake.

Looking out over Grand Lake from the Recreation Area in Disney, OK

This is the Recreation Area where RV camping is permitted.
There is a recreation area on the Disney side of the lake where we pulled in and parked while we read this week's "Grand Times on Grand Lake", formerly known as the Grand Lake Chronicle, that I picked up at a convenience store.   Our reason for stopping here was to view the Grand Lake Boat Parade which is to begin in Duck Creek, where 14 boats will travel to the dam and back to Duck Creek. We discovered details about the parade in "Grand Times".  The trip to the dam will take approximately 2 hours and we had plenty of time, so we decided to eat dinner at Cosby's Catfish, about 10 miles away.

What a great choice it was  - the food was delicious and was served family style - all the catfish, fries, cole slaw, hushpuppies and relishes you could eat.

The food was very good.

Here are a few pictures from the inside of Cosby's Catfish:

We stopped in this area used for loading and unloading boats for awhile.  The boats would travel down to this area and then make the bend that would take them to the dam, before they would turn and travel back.  We probably should have stayed here and we might have had a better view from this point.  If we ever return, this is the spot we would watch from.

Finally about 7:15 the boats paraded in front of us.  Unfortunately they did not come real close to shore - it might have been too shallow.  I was unable to get very good pictures but here is my best attempt under the circumstances.  While I'm glad we went, we were disappointed because it wasn't what we had expected.  Would we go back again?  Possibly if we knew we could find a better view and if I had a better camera to capture decent pictures.

When we returned to Oswego we had one more stop to make before calling it a night.  This year businesses and residents were encouraged to decorate trees in our own Riverside Park.  Tonight all of the lights were to be on, so we took a drive through and it was wonderful.  Now, again these pictures were taken with my phone.  I'm seriously thinking of asking Santa for a nice pocket camera!

What a wonderful day we had!
