July 28-29, 2017 - Paducah, Kentucky

Friday, July 28, 2017
We have broken our trip from Oswego to Fort Knox into 3 approximately 4 hour drives which is just about perfect for us.  We left the Ozark Mountain Springs CG at 9am and headed east toward Paducah.

Again, we had a nice drive, very uneventful and few pictures along the way.  I could not resist the one below though.  You know I love seeing our nation's flag and the wind was blowing it just right.  You will notice their is a second one on the left.  It was a slightly different angle and did not billow out as much but still impressive.

One of the best things about traveling this part of the country is getting to pass over the Mississippi River.  Dean is fascinated with it and would love to take a cruise on this river someday.  In the past we have taken different routes than we did today.  This is the bridge over the Mississippi River.  Notice the width of it as compared to the next bridge when we pass over the Ohio RIver.

As you can see we are approaching the Ohio River here.

Notice it is a little wider than the Mississippi Bridge.   He wasn't looking forward to taking this route because of the back to back narrow bridges, but he did great - I knew he would!  Of course there isn't any room for gawking around especially with lots of oncoming traffic so he did miss out on the view.

We arrived at the campground - Duck Creek RV Park at 1:17 p.m.  We have a nice pull-through site near the office area.  It was pretty warm when we arrived, so once we had everything set up and the air conditioners turned on, we headed out for some sightseeing.

One of the things I've wanted to know more about is the Land Between the Lakes which is about 20 miles east of Paducah.  I've inserted a map of the area below.

On the west side is Lake Kentucky and on the east side is Lake Barkley.  The land in between the two is known as Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.  We drove about 1/3 of the distance south and then turned back north.  It wasn't quite what we were expecting but it was a nice drive and we made a couple of stops.  First at the tourist information center located at the north end (closest to us) where we obtained information on what there was to do not only here at LBTL but also on Paducah and Kentucky.  We drove a scenic route that took us along Lake Kentucky.

We also drove into one of the campgrounds.

Really beautiful picnic areas.

This was just a young raccoon wandering along the roadside.
The lady we spoke with at the tourist center asked us if we had heard about Patti's 1880's Settlement, located in Grand Rivers, KY - which is at the northern entrance to Land Between the Lakes.  She told us they were known for their food especially their 2" - 1 # pork chops and their 7-8" high meringue pies.  We decided to drive through Grand Rivers and see where Patti's was located before heading back to the RV Park.

Veteran's Avenue of Flags.  Each flag had a plaque beneath it with the name and service branch of a Veteran.

A log cabin - it was for sale!

A lock on the Kentucky River.

Noticed this old Texaco station and memorabilia along the road as we headed back to Paducah.

We had some dinner back at Bentley, watched a little TV and then hit the sack for the night.  Travel days make us tired!  ðŸ˜Š

One of the reasons we looked forward to staying over in Paducah was to revisit a restaurant we ate lunch at a few years ago when passing through here with our son and his family on a return trip from Williamsburg, VA.  We found the Gold Rush Cafe on Trip Advisor and after reading the great reviews and variety of foods served we tried it out.  Everyone loved their meals and we have reminisced about it many times.  So after checking Trip Advisor again recently to see the ratings were not only still high but breakfast sounded really amazing - one of our favorite meals to try new restaurants.

We wanted to get to the Gold Rush fairly early and arrived sometime around 8:00 a.m.  It was busy but not packed so we were seated right away.  I was there for the amazing bread pudding waffle I had read about on Trip Advisor.  It is served with maple syrup butter.  My mouth was watering just thinking about it.  Dean had a meat omelet that was served with a nice helping of sausage gravy on top.  They were both delicious!  If you pass through Paducah give the Gold Rush a try!

I cut this up before I thought about taking a picture, and failed to take a picture of Dean's plate which was also amazing!

The Gold Rush is located in the original downtown area of Paducah and is located near the banks of the Ohio River.  The area has a number of storefronts and revitalization to the buildings, including high rise apartments.  It is just a few blocks to the riverfront so we decided to stroll that way.   We noticed there seemed to be several folks in Super Hero costumes and wondered if we had entered another dimension.  As we walked on down the street we also noticed food and vendor booths being set up as if some type of community event may be happening.

Storefront window painted in an art theme.  Notice the quilt block patterns - more on that later.

Interesting way to hide an abandoned storefront!

Beautiful buildings in the original downtown area.

Decent price to pay for the area wouldn't you say?

There have been a number of floods along the Ohio River which is immediately adjacent to the downtown area.  In a later picture you can see the height water has reached during flooding over the years.  The city has built walls at the edge of the downtown area with moving walls to close openings when the water rises to protect the downtown area.  The walls have beautiful murals showing the history of Paducah.  There are informational signs in front of the murals placed along a nice sidewalk so you can easily read about each of them.

JUST A REMINDER, YOU MAY CLICK ON ANY PICTURE TO ENLARGE IT.

I wanted to eliminate the two pictures above but for some reason when I do, a huge part of this entire post disappears - so these are shots of parking along the muraled walls surrounding the Ohio River area, that provide parking for many events held in the downtown area.

 Nice welcome sign.

From the roads in the downtown area, you can turn and drive down toward the river, the road then turns to the right and you can drive along the road below for a block, then turn back up to the main road outside of the river area.  There is seating here for people to set and watch boats travel along the river and there are boat ramps, along with places to park your truck and boat trailers while fishing.

If you enlarge the two pictures above you can see where there was brick type materials laid along the water's edge.  It is wearing but still looks pretty good as many times as the river has flooded over the years.

Speaking of flooding - see the picture below to see how high the water has been during floods over the years.

Saturday morning Paducash has a downtown farmer's market.  We visited and ending up purchasing two canteloupes, a watermelon and several tomatoes.  They were all delicious.  Notice this neat truck that was owned by Kirchoff's Bakery.  We did not buy anything but it all looked delicious.

I managed to get a picture of "The Hulk" one of the super hero characters roaming the streets of Paducah.

The Gold Rush Cafe! - it is worth visiting if you are in the area!

Lewis and Clark statue.  See the two plaques providing details about the statue.

We visited "The National Quilt Museum".  Amazing place, but unfortunately we could not take any pictures inside. I am so disappointed I cannot share any of the amazing talent we witnessed in this building.  Again, if you are in Paducah it is worth the visit to see these amazing masterpieces.  These are modern quilts - no antiques.

This building was "Strickland's Event Center & Catering".  Couldn't help but include it ---- any possibility it could be any relation to our Oswego Strickland's?

Townhomes in the downtown area - very beautiful.

Wonder Woman - she was a busy woman signing autographs for many children!

The Paducah Police Department was setting this up before the events of the day get started.  I think it will be a great hit!

I couldn't resist taking this picture as it made me think of our granddaughter Emerson - she loves Princesses!

You can see the number of people who have showed up for the super hero event in the picture above.  We stopped at one of the downtown buildings and when I asked Dean if it was open yet - a voice said, No it doesn't open until 10:00.  A man stepped out from behind a pedestal near us.   He was a local businessman who was conducting surveys of those attending.  I commented on how much we were enjoying their downtown and it was exciting to see all of the activity.  He told us they try to have events occurring on a regular basis to bring people to the downtown area.

Between the Farmers Market, the large attendance at the National Quilt Museum and the Super Hero activity, things were really hopping this Saturday morning!

We went back to Bentley for awhile after making a stop at Wal-mart for a few things.  We are going back to Land Between the Lakes later today to try out Patti's 1880's Homestead.

We saw this beautiful home on our way to Grand Rivers where Patti's 1880 Settlement is located.  Loved the double fireplace and the copper touches.

Dam for the Kentucky River.

You can see the boat waiting to enter the lock located on the Kentucky River.

For some reason I am having problems with Blogger - maybe it's the very slow internet service we are using here in the park.  Verizon has no signal here so I cannot use my hot spot - so I am going to save and publish this much of our trip and hope my attempt to finish it turns out better than this

Thursday, July 27, 2017 - Ozarks Mountain Springs RV Park, Mountain View, MO

Thursday, July 27, 2017 -  Ozarks Mountain Springs RV Park, Mountain View, MO

We spent the last two days cleaning and then reloading Bentley with food, clothes, etc. in preparation for our trip to Kentucky and Ohio to spend time with our son Matt, his wife Megan and their two children Josh and Sarah.  We decided it was easier to just spend the night in Bentley on Wednesday evening since everything we needed was already loaded.  It rained this morning which hopefully will cool the day down compared to the temperatures we've had the past several weeks.  Before we leave for Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, a short trip to Tennessee and then we will reverse our steps back through Kentucky and Missouri, we have a stop to make this morning to watch two of our grandchildren Dacy and Tucker show their meat goats at the Cherokee County Fair in Columbus, Kansas.

A couple of pictures of them showing their goats.
Tucker is at the front of the line with his goat.   He received Reserve Champion.

Dacy is the  closest to me with the dark headed goat.  She just missed Reserve Champion and received a blue ribbon.

Dacy and Tucker (3rd & 4th) with their breeding goats.
It was fairly cool when we arrived at the show barn.  The entire time we watched the goat showings it was cool, with large fans blowing all around us.  After the goat show was completed, we walked over to the Girl Scout House here at the Cherokee County Fairgrounds where we had lunch with our son Brett, wife Renae, Dacy and Tucker before we headed back to Oswego to hitch up Bentley and begin our 4 hour drive to Mountain View, MO.  We were surprised when we walked outside of the goat arena - it was hot and sultry.  They did an excellent job of keeping the arena area comfortable!  By the way the food at the GS House was pretty good and the young Girl Scouts working there did a good job of taking our orders and serving us.  What a great experience for them!

Our drive to the campground, Ozarks Mountain Springs RV Park, was uneventful.  Since we've traveled this road before - last spring in fact - I didn't even bother to take any pictures. We made two short potty stops along the way and arrived at the campground a little after 5:30.  Fortunately, we had a nice easy spot to pull in to and we were soon set up.  Even though today was much cooler it was still warm in Bentley, so we set outside for awhile enjoying a nice breeze while the air conditioners did their magic to cool Bentley off before I fixed us some dinner.

Dean enjoying the cooler weather in our campground this evening.

A couple of weeks ago my sister Cindy and I went to Joplin to run a few errands and then stopped by to see our step-dad.  I was hungry so we hit the drive-through at Taco Bell.  I ordered a chicken burrito and it was delicious.  I liked it so well I decided to see if I could not replicate them at home.  They were pretty good the first time I made them, but I felt like the seasoning was a little bland, so tonight I am making them again and will use a full package of taco seasoning as the package directs.

The burritos were better tonight, however I might cut back on the taco seasoning just a bit next time or add a bit more chicken, but overall we thought they were very good and I will definitely make them again.

Recipe for Chicken Burritos

I cut up a rotisserie chicken then cooked it in a package of taco seasoning, per the package instructions.  I also made 2 cups of white rice.  While waiting for the rice to get done, I warmed up tortilla shells, then divided the chicken and rice between the shells. The final step was to add sour cream (a fairly good amount), before folding them up.  Yum..yum!! Very easy and almost like running through Taco Bell's drive-up without having to leave Bentley!

Once dinner was over we were pretty well worn out - we watched a little TV and then hit the sack.  We will stop over in Paducah, KY for two days tomorrow.  We've passed through here several times and although we've walked through their downtown area and had a meal or two, we are looking forward to exploring more of the area.  Stay tuned!

June 19, 2017

Our stay at the KOA in Terre Haute, IN was quiet.  Once we picked up our burgers at the restaurant we stayed in the rest of the evening.  I guess we were tired from all of the activities and the drive today.

It was a nice cool morning when we woke up and we walked here in the campground, about 2 miles.  We really had a chance to see what a nice RV park this was and I took a lot of pictures to share.  If you had kids this would be a great place to visit for a few days as there is quite a few things for them to do.  Besides spots for RV's, they also have tent camping, large Tee-Pee's you can rent, cabins, and upgraded RV spots.  Here are the pictures I took of the area:

Little Village - it looked like they might have a small train for small guests but it may just be a prop.

Checkers and Chess

There are two small ponies/donkeys in this barnyard.

Entrance to Park

Even though the Interstate is just beyond these trees we had no idea we were this close.  Very quiet here.
After breakfast, we hooked up and we pulled out of Terre Haute KOA about 9:00 and pointed Bentley towards St. Louis, MO.

This truck had a really long load on his trailer.

Traffic backed up during road construction but fortunately it didn't last too long.

The Mighty Mississippi

Different bridge than our trip to Indiana.

I love this bridge structure.

We have about a five hour day ahead of us but it was a nice easy ride, despite working our way around St. Louis - which went very well considering some of our past attempts at making it through this city.  We both breathed a sigh of relief and while we might have taken a little longer route we'll probably stick with this one in the future because it went so well.

We have a few grand-kids that would have loved to stop here at Six Flags!  Wish they were here!!

It was just another 40 minutes or so until we arrived at Robertsville State Park.  You might remember we stayed here on our way to Goshen as well.  We do like this park even though it only has 30 amp electric.  However it is in a very wooded area and fortunately the temperatures had dropped quite a bit and it was very comfortable with just the one air conditioner running.

While we were at the Escapade Rally in Tucson we purchased grill mats for our Weber Q but we had never used them.  We decided we would try them out tonight and we fixed breakfast outside on the Weber.  Hash browns, bacon, sausage and eggs, plus biscuits in the cast iron skillet on the Weber as well.  It took a little bit to get it all done but it was quite good and the grill mat worked well.

I was exhausted this evening for some reason and could not keep my eyes open.  When we went to bed I had no problem going back to sleep either - that is unusual, but sure was glad I wasn't laying there wide awake.

June 20, 2017 - Home Again, Home Again!

After our morning coffee Dean asked if I wanted to walk and of course I did.  It was so nice when we stepped out of Bentley, in the upper 50's.  What a nice beautiful morning to be outside.  We walked slightly over 2 miles, had our breakfast and then packed up for the last leg of our trip, back to Oswego.

I'm not sure if I have shared our window upgrade with you.  We won a gift certificate for $50 off a stained glass window for Bentley's door when we were in Branson - and this is what I chose.  I love it as I can now see out our window.  When the sun hits this in the evenings it makes for a beautiful site as well.

We love our new steps that we purchased from Lin while at the Heartland rally.  When we parked here before we had to have a step stool in order to reach our lowest step into the rig.  These are just perfect.
Our drive today from Robertsville State Park to Oswego was very easy, but very long - over 6 hours.  Here are a few pictures I took along the way.

City of St. Roberts Water Tower
"St. Roberts Supports Our Troops"

Lebanon Water Tower
I love the bees!

I can't resist a great FLAG!

It was good to see Joplin, and then the exit for Downstream Casino - we knew we were almost home.

We arrived home around 3:00 p.m. - and who did we meet as we rounded the curve into Oswego but my sister Cindy - she was waiting to turn into the RV Park my uncle owns here. I think we were as surprised to see her as she was to see it was us!

Once Dean parked Bentley in his spot at our home, we hauled most of our stuff inside so I could get started on laundry right away.  This is the longest I have ever gone without doing laundry - over 2 weeks.  I do not look forward to getting it all done but I'm going to make a dent in it tonight so hopefully tomorrow will go quickly.

Dean was a sweetheart and took me to "Mi Pueblo", our local Mexican restaurant tonight for dinner.  It was so good and most of all I did not have to cook after this long day.  Thank you honey!

So, we are here at home for awhile but we have some trips coming up the latter part of July-October so watch for new posts!

**I realized I forgot to insert pictures of the harness racing from last Friday so here are a few pictures from that as well as a picture of Lady E during the last class on Induction Cooking.
